Every filmmaker has a unique process when it comes to seeing a project through until the end of production, but using Minecraft to make that happen is probably a first. Ben Wheatley, the director behind the sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider movie, says he begins his pre-production planning inside of Mojang Studio’s open-world sandbox game. Wheatley revealed the info in a recent interview with Polygon, where he explained how the process worked during pre-production on his 2016 Brie Larson-led project, Free Fire....

Torchlight 3 opens up by forcing players into a conflict they can’t fully understand, simply being told to immediately fight, kill, and run errands that ultimately don’t make much sense. This shock eventually wears down, opening players’ eyes to a beautiful game world, some unique class designs, and a solid dungeon crawler, but it must be said that the shock never fully goes away. This is mostly due to Torchlight 3’s attempts to reconcile a lot of moving parts that, while delivering a mostly fun and workable experience, can feel like excess....

Trek to Yomi is a new side-scrolling samurai game from publisher Devolver Digital which launches at some point next year. Announced during Devolver Digital’s Max Pass Plus live stream, Trek to Yomi sees you playing as a young swordsman named Hiroki who is tasked by his dying master to protect the village and his loved ones from outside threats. According to the description underneath the game’s YouTube trailer, this lone samurai will “voyage beyond life and death to confront himself and decide his path forward....

Though a compelling single player element and engaging cooperative modes like Zombies have always been subheadings on the calling card of Call of Duty, the franchise’s real bread and butter is its multiplayer. Beyond keeping players engaged for dozens of hours upon end, the multiplayer helps prolong the length of the title long after the 5-8 hour campaign has been completed. League of Legends’ Twitch presence hasn’t been waning by any stretch, but there has been a large void in the streaming community of Riot’s stalwart MOBA title ever since the banning of Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp from the game. The streamer, known for producing strategies based entirely on trolling his teammates and opponents alongside extremely toxic behavior, was banned indefinitely in spring 2016. Calls to “free Tyler1” have been present in every high-profile League of Legends event’s Twitch chat ever since, and Riot finally caved, allowing Tyler1 to return to the game and to the Twitch streaming platform as a result on January 8, 2018....

Ubisoft has hired four developers from Telltale Games to bring their “wealth of storytelling expertise” to the company’s San Francisco studio, which is currently working on the recently-delayed South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Ubisoft made clear in the press release, however, that the new blood will focus on Ubisoft San Francisco’s “future projects”. The new hires are creative producer Adam Sarasohn (Tales From The Borderlands), narrative director Pierre Shorette (The Wolf Among Us, Tales From The Borderlands), and senior design directors Dennis Lenart (The Walking Dead, Minecraft: Story Mode) and Nick Herman (The Walking Dead)....

LucasFilm Games has announced that Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment will be working on a new open-world Star Wars game, breaking EA’s 7-year exclusive streak of publishing the franchise’s video game titles. The upcoming game isn’t the only space-set open-world game in development, however. Bethesda is currently working on its first new IP in over two decades, Starfield. Not much is known about Starfield or the new Star Wars games beyond plans for both to be open-world, yet this means both of the upcoming titles share one big challenge....

Sony and Naughty Dog unveil the costs for the forthcoming action-adventure title Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s microtransactions, with the most expensive pricing tier going for $50. It’s no secret that microtransactions in video games are an extremely divisive issue when it comes to most fans of the medium. As a matter of fact, when the developers at Naughty Dog divulged that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End would have microtransactions in the title’s multiplayer which would have players spend actual currency for what are called “Uncharted Points,” it definitely raised some eyebrows....

Untitled Goose Game, the popular puzzle-stealth-sandbox game that allows users to play as a goose, has received some big news. The game was in closed beta for a while, and its popularity only grew until its official release date in September 2019.
