So there may have briefly been a cancer-causing gene that was named “Pokemon.” That is, until Nintendo found out about it. Dr. Lava doesn’t have a Ph.D., but he is still the world’s premier Pokémon historian on Twitter. His latest tidbit recalls that one time Nintendo had to almost sue a hospital research group for trying to name a cancer-causing gene “Pokemon.” Discovered back in the early 2000s by geneticist Pier Paolo Pandolfi from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the gene acts as a master switch for cancer and is thought to be responsible for causing cancer in surrounding cells....

Respawn Entertainment explains in news post that PC gamers won’t have access to Titanfall 2’s upcoming beta in an effort to keep some aspects of the game a secret. Ever since the current generation consoles launched and games became heavily online dependent, developers have turned to closed and open betas to test their games with players. Often these betas include only a snippet of content, but they allow players to whet their appetites for the game and developers to test their servers and game engines....

Respawn has revealed that they are removing the original Titanfall from digital storefronts and streaming services, and the decision has divided franchise fans who no longer know whether they should keep holding on to hope for Titanfall 3. For those of you who missed it, Respawn recently revealed via Twitter that they have decided to discontinue sales of 2014’s Titanfall starting…err…yesterday. They will also be removing Titanfall from subscription services starting on March 1, 2022....

The Teen Titans have already been the subject of one of DC’s most-acclaimed series: Marv Wolfman and George Perez’s New Teen Titans. They headlined two wildly successful animated shows (three, if you count the Titans-adjacent Young Justice). Pro skating legend Tony Hawk continues to prove he is one of the most genuinely amazing people around. In a post on Instagram yesterday, Hawk revealed that the upcoming Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remaster/remake will include a name change for an insanely popular trick. Previously called the “Mute Grab,” it turns out the history behind that name isn’t exactly progressive. For the past month or so, Twitch has been switching the coveted PogChamp emote with a new streamer every day. This was done because the old PogChamp, Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, said some pretty heinous stuff on Twitter following the January 6 insurrection that resulted in several deaths and one permanently banned now-former President. The initial solution to this problem originally came from Sean “Day9” Plott who suggested that Twitch create a database of alternate PogChamps and randomly draw from it whenever a Twitch viewer typed in the emote....

While most of us think of esports as League of Legends and Counter-Strike, there’s actually quite a bit of esports leagues that are actually analogs of traditional sports. Starfield, the new space epic being developed by Bethesda Game Studios, is the first new franchise in twenty-five years from the creators of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 76. Although not much is known about the RPG, executive producer Todd Howard has stated that Starfield will see the light of day before The Elder Scrolls 6, the follow-up to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, which was released on November 11, 2011....

Valheim features five different bosses that players must defeat in order to progress. While Valheim’s first boss, Eikthyr, is fairly easy, players may have a slightly harder time with the second boss, the Elder. The Elder is the main boss of Valheim’s Black Forest biome. This massive tree ent is big and comes with some wicked powers. Players who are inexperienced with the game may have some trouble with the fight, as the Elder is a big step up in difficultly from anything they have fought before....

Last year, Dota 2 organization Newbee and its players received bans after a match-fixing scandal. It looks like Valve and Perfect World has doubled down on the punishment, permanently banning Newbeee and its roster of Faith, Moogy, AQ, Wizard, and Waixi from all Dota 2 events. The saga surrounding Newbee and its player isn’t new and began in May of last year. The Chinese Dota 2 Professional Association (CDA) and ImbaTV were the first to ban the group after the allegations of match-fixing popped up....

After issues with distribution, HTC now confirms that the Valve-associated Vive VR headset is now available for customers just three days after initial purchase has taken place. Although early adopters have generally been happy with the first wave of new virtual reality hardware to hit the market, it’s fair to say that the launches of these new headsets have hardly been smooth. Thankfully for purchasers of the Vive, it seems as though Valve and HTC have sorted out some of the distribution issues that plagued the initial launch of the VR headset....

Thanks to some recent datamines, Pokemon GO players are able to feel pretty confident that some sort of subscription model is coming to the mobile AR experience. At this point there haven’t been any official announcements about a subscription or what it would entail, so there has been a whole lot of speculation about everything from the release date to the price to the potential benefits. There still isn’t any official word from Niantic on that front, but the company has revealed details about the Ingress subscription model, which could be a great place to look for hints about how things could work in PoGO’s future....
