For a mostly silent protagonist, Mario has never had an issue expressing himself through body language and facial expressions. If anyone were to be up to the task of judging what someone’s mood is based on their face, it would be him. But, things are never so simple in the world of Paper Mario: The Origami King. So, when Mario is challenged to guess the mood of another character blocking him on his quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom, it just so happens to be a Snifit. As we all know Snifits never take their masks off, so how can you possibly guess his mood correctly? We’ll give you the tips to even the odds in this rigged mini-game!

You’ll find this Snifit when you eventually come to Snif City at a booth in the Northwest section of the map. The giant lamp with a green L on it makes it hard to miss. Talking to him will give you the option to play his game for 100 coins, but get 10,000 if you can win. There are two rounds of this game, and losing has more consequences than just losing a bunch of coins.

How To Win The Snifit Mood Mini-Game

Round one of the mood mini-game is random, so there’s no way to 100% guarantee you will win. That said, there are only four possible answers, and you get three attempts to guess. Because the Snifit will not change his mood between guesses, as long as you pick a different mood on each of your attempts you will have a 75% chance of getting it right.

If you have bad luck and don’t end up winning the first round, it’s going to cost you 1,000 coins to try again. While that hurts, it does have a silver lining. After paying to play again the first two guesses you make will still be random, but before you take your final guess the Snifit will chuckle to himself. That is a dead giveaway that his mood is “Snickering Sniff.” Pick that option and you’ll have beat this cheating Sniff at his own game.

What Happens When You Win

You might be expecting that 10,000 coin prize the Snifit promised for winning, but it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to learn he has no intention of holding up his end of the bet. He makes a quick getaway instead, but in his place is a magic circle. Activate the circle and rub the magic lamp to set your poor brother Luigi free. He’s holding on to the Suite Key which you’ll need to open the locked door on the second floor of the Royal Hotel.

What Happens When You Lose

If you either deny playing the second round after losing the first, or guess wrong all three times on the second round, Mario will get sucked into the lamp with Luigi until the end of time. Thinking about it, that just might be the most brutal Game Over Mario could ever encounter. With a little preparation, knowledge, and observation, you can easily avoid condemning Mario to such a terrible fate.
