One of the greatest JRPGs of all time is now available on Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox One, as the original Final Fantasy VII can be downloaded by Game Pass subscribers.
We say “original” Final Fantasy VII only to differentiate it from the full remake of the game that was released earlier this year, which is currently a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Final Fantasy VII Remake will almost certainly be coming to PC and Xbox One next April when the current exclusivity deal ends, as well as the next generation of systems in the future, but that’s not the one coming to Game Pass at this time.
Final Fantasy VII was brought to Xbox One last March, alongside a version for the Nintendo Switch, and the current version of the game has been available on PC since 2013. The PC version of Final Fantasy VII is now available to download and play on Game Pass, through both the PC and Xbox One versions of the app (or both, to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.)
The current iteration of Final Fantasy VII is an updated port of the original PC version of the game. It contains upscaled visuals, achievements, cloud saves (on compatible systems), and “boosters” – which act as in-game cheats/QoL improvements, such as speeding up battles or skipping random encounters. These updates make the new version of Final Fantasy VII the definitive version of the game, as it lets players avoid some of the more frustrating aspects of the original title.
Microsoft has been developing a relationship with Square Enix over the past year, which has led to a number of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games being released on PC and Xbox One systems. Microsoft has always struggled to find an audience in Japan, which is why banding with Square Enix is such a good idea going into the Series X generation. Having access to lots of high-quality Square Enix titles is a great reason to subscribe to Game Pass, after all.
Final Fantasy VII is available now on Xbox Game Pass for both PC and Xbox One.
