Pokémon is getting on board with Black Lives Matter with a huge donation to nonprofits around the world.
Following news that Niantic plans to donate a minimum of $5 million from sales of Pokémon GO Fest 2020 tickets to nonprofits that support projects from Black game makers, the Pokémon Group has fired back stating that they’re going to be matching that amount to other nonprofits around the world.
The Pokémon Group and Niantic will donate $5 million toward organizations that aim at “improving the lives of children with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
And since somebody must have mentioned that this statement was far too vague to be taken at face value, Nintendo added: “In our ongoing commitment to the Black community, this will include organizations supporting education and mentorship opportunities for Black children.”
This is a much larger donation than what the Pokémon Group promised earlier in June, which included $100,000 donations to both Black Lives Matter and the NAACP.
While this is welcome news, it does seem to smack at least a little bit of Nintendo being late to jump fully onboard with the movement. Better late than never, of course.
