No matter what people say, attacking power is important in Pokemon battles, and some Pokemon inherently have it better than others.

A Pokemon’s ability to deal damage of the rough-and-tumble variety is quantified in the physical Attack stat. While every type is capable of dealing physical damage to some extent thanks to the physical-special split, some are better at it than others. This list will stack the best squarer-uppers and hand-throwers of each type against each other, and hopefully give you an idea of how the types stack as a whole in that department.

Note: Mega Evolutions are discussed, but not counted in the overall ranking. Arceus holding type plates is ineligible.

18 Poison: Toxicroak

If you need any proof that Poison is one of the worst offensive types in the game, look no further. The topnotcher for the type on this list is Toxicroak at a mere 106 Attack. That’s by no means bad in any other circumstance, but it’s terrible when compared to everyone else here.

At least Mega Beedrill exists, flaunting a 150 Attack stat that blows every other Poison-type out of the water. The next best options for physical offense from the Poison-type are Muk (105, both regional variants), Victreebel (105), and Nidoking (102).

17 Ghost: Dhelmise

The Ghost-type takes a huge jump from the last entry at 131, with Dhelmise being the recipient of this spot. Five more Pokemon surpass the 120 mark: Blacephalon (127), Marshadow (125), Golurk (124), Dragapult (120), and Origin Form Giratina (120).

A Mega Evolved honorable mention is Banette, boasting a massive 165 Attack stat in its Mega Evolution. That even surpasses some of the strongest Pokemon on this list.

16 Bug: Buzzwole

It’s a close fight between two Bug/Fighting-type Ultra Beasts for the Bug-type spot. Buzzwole just edges it out at 139, with Pheromosa taking a super-close second at 137.

Although, Four Mega Evolutions have better Attack stats than both of them, and by a considerable margin. The leader of that swarm, Mega Heracross, has the second-highest Attack stat ever (185); the three other Bug-types that follow are Mega Pinsir (155), Mega Scizor (150), and Mega Beedrill (150).

15 Fire: Unovan Darmanitan

While Unovan Darmanitan’s 140 can’t surpass Mega Blaziken’s 160 or Primal Groudon’s 180, it’s enough to take the spot here among non-Mega’d-up Fire-type Pokemon.

There are quite a few heavy-duty burners just below it, including the Legendary Ho-Oh (130) and Reshiram (120), the Ultra Beast Blacephalon (127), the Eeveelution Flareon (130), and a few starters in Mega Charizard X (130), Emboar (123), and regular Blaziken (120).

14 Fighting: Conkeldurr

The poster child type for physical offense surprisingly only makes it to 14th place on this list, being represented by Conkeldurr. Its 140 is excellent, but not when compared to the others here.

However, similarly to the Bug-type, a whopping five Pokemon have better Attack stats when Mega Evolved. That includes Mega Mewtwo X, who has the highest Attack stat ever at 190, with the runner-up being Mega Heracross (185). Mega Gallade (165), Mega Blaziken (160), and Mega Lucario (145).

13 Water: Ash-Greninja

Ash-Greninja (145) would have been overtaken by just a hair by three Pokemon if Mega Evolutions were considered. Mega Gyarados (155) and Swampert (150), and Primal Kyogre (150) all would have pushed it back to fourth place. Even Mega Sharpedo (140) comes pretty close.

The next best non-Mega Pokemon are Rapid Strike Style Urshifu and Kingler, tied at 130. Six more Pokemon surpass 120. All of this is to say: the Water-type is excellent at physical offense.

12 Electric: Zekrom

While the Electric-type is far more dangerous on the special side, it’s a fine physical attacking type, too. Case in point: the 150 Attack Zekrom.

Unfortunately, the rest of the Electric-types aren’t spectacular; only three Pokemon surpass the elite mark of 120. That isn’t great for the purposes of this list, and it doesn’t help that said three — Electivire (123), Alolan Golem (120), and Luxray (120) — aren’t really competitively viable.

11 Flying: Rayquaza

Mega or no Mega, Rayquaza is a total powerhouse. In its regular form, it’s at an astounding 150, and in its Mega Evolution, it’s at an even more astounding 180.

In between those two formes is Mega Pinsir, who completely outdoes itself with 155 Attack. The next two Pokemon, namely Mega Salamence and Therian Landorus, tie at 145. The last few winged ‘mons at or above 130 are Archeops (140), Mega Aerodactyl (135), regular Salamence (135), Dragonite (134), Yveltal (131), and Ho-Oh (130).

10 Ground: Groudon

It’s a similar case with Rayquaza’s trio mate, Groudon. It takes the cake for the Ground-types, Primal Reversion or not. It even has the same Attack stat as Rayquaza in both formes (180 in Primal, 150 in regular).

When taking other Megas into consideration, you have an awesome top five: Primal Groudon (180), Mega Garchomp (170), Mega Swampert (150), Therian Landorus (145), and Rhyperior (140). Even without the Megas of this bunch, the Ground-type is a hard-hitting one for sure.

9 Normal: Slaking & Regigigas

What do you know? This entry’s representatives are two Pokemon that would otherwise be completely overpowered if it weren’t for completely nerfing abilities in Truant and Slow Start, respectively. Both have an Attack stat of 160.

When looking at other Normal-types, the roster’s pretty solid, with eight others surpassing the 120 mark, including a flock of regional birds in Braviary (123), Staraptor and Toucannon (120); two bear Pokemon in Ursaring (130) and Bewear (125), two nigh-unstoppable Megas from Mega Lopunny (136) and Mega Kangaskhan (125), and the great Arceus (120).

8 Dark: Hoopa Unbound

Mega Tyranitar (164) would have taken this spot if it weren’t a Mega Evolution, but instead, it’ll be given to Hoopa Unbound (160). In fact, there are a lot of other contenders that happen to be Mega Evolutions: Mega Gyarados (155), Mega Absol (150), and Mega Sharpedo (140).

Still, the Dark-type has quite a few formidable physical attackers without them. Ash-Greninja (145), regular Tyranitar (134), Yveltal (131), Single Strike Style Urshifu (130), and regular Absol (130) stand out the most in that group alongside those that were previously mentioned.

7 Rock: Rampardos

Barring Megas, Generation IV’s headstrong fossil has a fairly uncontested grip on the Rock-type top spot at 165 Attack. The two Megas in question, Mega Tyranitar (164) and Diancie (160) come very close, though.

Still, the Rock-type consists of a lot of Pokemon with excellent Attack stats, with Archeops and Rhyperior (140) rounding out a 140+ top five. Twelve more Pokemon have at least 120, including quite a few more fossils in Mega Aerodactyl (135), Armaldo (125), Cranidos (125), and Tyrantrum (121).

6 Ice: Black Kyurem

There’s a surprising number of cold-blooded hard-hitters from the Ice-type, and Black Kyurem leads that charge at 170.

While Ice Rider Calyrex is the only one that comes really close at 165, there are quite a few that surpass the 130 mark. There’s seven of them, to be exact: Glastrier (145), Galarian Darmanitan (140), Mega Abomasnow (132), Crabominable (132), Mamowsine (130), Beartic (130), and regular Kyurem (130).

5 Dragon: Black Kyurem

The Ice-type pool is pretty formidable, but it can’t even compete with the Dragon-type pool. Black Kyurem still leads this group, but only without Mega Evolutions.

When looking at all Pokemon of all formes, the indominable Mega Rayquaza would’ve taken this spot at 180. After Black Kyurem and Mega Garchomp at second place (170), you still have to deal with another overpowered behemoth in Ultra Necrozma (167), plus ten more Pokemon forms above 130.

4 Fairy: Crowned Sword Form Zacian

Crowned Sword Form Zacian is already one of the most overpowered Pokemon ever. Part of the reason is the Attack stat — which gets boosted by its Intrepid Sword ability — is absurdly high as-is, at 170.

That’s far and away the best among Fairy-types, aside from Diancie’s Mega Evolution (160). While the next best options — Xerneas (131), Zacian in its standard Hero of Many Battles form (130), Tapu Bulu (130) — aren’t anything to scoff at, they’d get blasted into space by the armored Generation VIII Legendary.

3 Psychic: Deoxys-Attack

Deoxys-Attack’s 180 Attack stat is enough to make it the undisputed leader among Psychic-types, unless you count Mega Mewtwo X’s 190, which is the highest of all-time when including Megas.

While the Psychic-type is more deadly on the special side, the physical attackers of the bunch are still incredibly powerful. After the aforementioned two, you have Ultra Necrozma (167), Ice Rider Calyrex (165), Mega Gallade (165), Hoopa Unbound (160), Dusk Mane Necrozma (157), base Deoxys (150), and Mega Mewtwo Y (150) all at 150 or above.

2 Grass: Kartana

Among all non-Mega Evolved Pokemon regardless of type, UB-04 Blade wears the crown for the best Attack stat, with its 181 points. When including Megas, it’s third behind Mega Mewtwo X (190) and Mega Heracross (185).

Such a high Attack stat is an anomaly for a Grass-type. While there are a few excellent physical attackers that reach 130 in Mega Abomasnow (132), Dhelmise (131), Breloom (130), and Tapu Bulu (130), no other Grass-type Pokemon comes close to any of the ones listed here, including Kartana.

1 Steel: Kartana

Kartana’s victory in the Steel-type race is much closer, with old friend Crowned Zacian getting an honorable second place at 170. That’s not the only reappearance on this list, as the previously mentioned Dusk Mane Necrozma (157), Mega Scizor (150), and Mega Lucario (145) have had honorable mentions elsewhere.

A few of the contenders here not yet mentioned include Mega Metagross (145) and two pure Steel-types: Melmetal (143) and Mega Aggron (140).
