Sony came out swinging after revealing a plethora of games for the PlayStation 5 lineup as well as the official reveal of what the console will look like. Gone are the days of the black aesthetic many associate the PlayStation brand with.
Instead, the PS5 will rock a mainly white design with black as a secondary color and blue highlights. It’s beautiful for sure, but it left us wondering what it would have looked like if they had gone for the standard black design. Reddit, of course, had the answer and the black PS5 looks amazing.
Sony hasn’t always designed the PlayStation line in black. The original PlayStation came in grey with controllers to match. It wasn’t really until the PlayStation 2 came out that ushered in the black and blue look associated with the console. It’s a color scheme many have grown to know and love and while the white of the PS5 looks pretty great, something about the black version makes it feel classy and familiar. Pair it with the blue accents and it’s a truly gorgeous looking machine.
Of course, not every PlayStation console has been black. There have been numerous limited edition consoles that have come in a variety of colors and look great. Still, the fan edit brings back the feeling of that familiar console.
The white-based design was hinted at when Sony revealed the new DualSense controller to come with the PlayStation 5. It makes sense the console itself would match up with it, but it still feels like a really bold move. Praising the black version isn’t to take away from the PS5 design at all, though. It’s beautiful and the reveal was gorgeous. It looks amazing and gets us excited for the next generation of gaming.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are the beginning of a new era in console gaming. While Xbox went with a minimalist design, Sony embraced the next step of the console’s evolution and designed a machine unlike anything we have really seen from a console before. It’s sleek and quite beautiful in white. It just looks even better in black.
