Original estimates were apparently too low, as WarnerMedia chairman and HBO Max boss Bob Greenblatt is saying the price cut on the Snyder Cut is well over $30 million.

When the now legendary Snyder Cut became official for HBO Max, reports indicated that it would cost somewhere between $20-$30 million in additional editing and visual effects. Unfortunately, that estimate, according to Greenblatt, is quite a bit off.

Speaking to Peter Kafka on the Recode Media Podcast (via Screenrant), Greenblatt explained that there is still a lot of work to be done on the project and that he wished it was only going to cost $30 million.

A “radical rethinking” of the movie falls in line with the way Snyder has described the project. The Snyder Cut is expected to increase the length of the film by at least a couple hours and will likely be presented in a mini-series format.

“It isn’t as easy as going into the vault and there’s a Snyder Cut sitting there to put out… Zack is actually building it and it’s complex, including - and I don’t wanna get into too much detail that we haven’t already talked about yet - but, new effects shots. It’s a radical rethinking of that movie and it’s complicated and wildly expensive. Which is, of course, a number I won’t quote… I’ll just say I wish it was $30 million and stop there.”

The price tag, however high it actually is, may be a smart investment for WarnerMedia no matter how the Snyder Project is ultimately received. The theatrical version of Justice League is often hailed as an immense failure both critically and financially, but box office numbers will never be able to account for the power of brand awareness and value of merchandising for the Justice League franchise. No matter what happens with the Snyder Cut it will end up selling DC Comics products far and wide.
