Fire-type Pokemon have always been some of the most popular throughout the Pokemon series. Their powerful fiery attacks make an impact on both young and old fans, with classic Fire-types like Charizard still being fan-favorites so many decades later.
That said, the non-Legendary Fire-types you can catch in each region can vary much more wildly, and if you’re a Fire-type fanatic, you’re going to have a tough time choosing the right one. When cutting out Legendary Pokemon and your Fire-type Starters, though, it’s easy to see a few Fire-type Pokemon that stand out among the crowd.
8 Galar: Coalossal
It feels almost criminal to not give this to Cinderace, the speedy Fire-type starter that’s taken over competitive play in Pokemon Sword & Shield. Unfortunately, this list is dedicated to the Pokemon you can actually catch, meaning we have to look at another competitive powerhouse that can burn out opponents with little trouble.
This would be Coalossal, an immense monstrosity with wicked defenses, a powerful signature ability to speed it up when hit by Fire- or Water-type attacks, and an unstoppable Gigantamax Form that gives it even more bulk. It might seem like a typical weak regional Rock-type, but Coalossal has enough going for it that you can look over its weaknesses easily.
7 Alola: Salazzle
Salazzle is almost ridiculous in its power as a speedy special attacker. Its Poison- and Fire-type combination is completely unique, and with that comes a wide range of attacks that let it fire Super Effective attacks on all sorts of opponents. It has a ton of weaknesses of its own, but it’ll often outrun and hit foes too hard for them to hold it back.
The only other catchable Fire-type Pokemon in Alola that comes close is Blacephalon, but being an Ultra Beast makes it more similar to a Legendary than your average catchable creature. Even disregarding that, its Fire- and Ghost-type combination is far too dull compared to Salazzle, meaning this powerful space clown is still slightly unoriginal.
6 Kalos: Talonflame
Talonflame is one of the first regional bird Pokemon to get a unique primary typing besides Normal-type, and its Fire-type addition gives it a lot more power than most others. Having access to moves like Flare Blitz and Flame Charge give it a huge boost in certain matchups, and its high speed tops some of the fastest Pokemon in the entire series.
However, its real power comes in its Hidden Ability, Gale Wings, which gives all Flying-type moves the speed of a Quick Attack when it’s at full health. This has led to many competitive strategies to give teams a sudden Tailwind to boost their speed, but also helps it just hit your opponents with moves like Brave Bird at record-setting paces.
5 Unova: Volcarona
It’s impossible to compare any other Fire-type in Unova to Volcarona, a powerful Bug- and Fire-type combination with an alarmingly high Special Attack stat. This Pokemon certainly suffers from a wide set of weaknesses, but given its remarkable speed and power that can be increased through Quiver Dance, it’s miles beyond most other Pokemon in the region.
The only other one that comes close is Darmanitan, who has an especially high physical Attack stat and is perhaps more common. That said, its defenses are significantly more fragile than Volcarona, who has a wider set of weaknesses while at the same time having many unique resistances thanks to its Bug-type.
4 Sinnoh: Magmortar
If you’re a fan of Fire-types and choose to play a Sinnoh game, you’re probably going to be quite disappointed. This game introduced fewer Fire-type Pokemon than nearly any other region, with the Fire-type form of Rotom not even being widely available until the Johto remakes long afterward.
This means your prime choice is Magmortar, a surprisingly powerful Fire-type tank with a wide variety of TM options including Thunderbolt and Focus Blast. It takes a unique degree of effort to evolve since you need to trade it while holding a Magmarizer item, but if have an extra DS or a friend and come across a Magmar, Magmortar is definitely worth the time.
3 Hoenn: Camerupt
The Hoenn region is actually surprisingly similar to Sinnoh, only having a few new Fire-types that weren’t Legendaries or Starters. That said, its most signature Fire-type for the villainous Team Magma is also one of the strongest in the game, with Camerupt easily being the most underrated member of this list.
Its Fire- and Ground-type combination is great, but even better is its mixed set of offensive stats that let it use any move with astounding power, particularly strong attacks like Earthquake and Eruption. This, combined with a remarkable Mega Evolution in the remakes of the Hoenn games, makes for a worthwhile Fire-type for any trainer’s team.
2 Johto: Houndoom
Even though catching Houndoom can be quite difficult, it’s hard to ignore just how powerful this puppy is, both as a Fire- and Dark-type Pokemon. It was one of the first Dark-types in the entire series, and given how weak most were, it gave Houndoom a huge edge against the common and overpowered Psychic-types early in the series.
Much like Camerupt, it also has a great mixed set of offensive stats, but these are coupled with a higher speed that let it outrun tons of the competition. That said, its power also lies greatly in its absurdly powerful Mega Evolution, which boosts its Special Attack to record highs alongside an even more intimidating appearance.
1 Kanto: Arcanine
While it isn’t as varied as the many forms of Charizard, Arcanine does everything you want from a Fire-type and more. Its greatest strengths are in its Fire-type attacks, learning tons early and evolving quite easily with a Fire Stone as soon as you’ve taught it enough powerful moves to make Growlithe strong enough on its own.
However, competitive trainers have also started using Arcanine as a support teammate, lowering foes offensive stats with the ability Intimidate and the move Snarl. This range as both a skilled battler and a supportive ally is unlike any other Kanto Pokemon, and makes it just as relevant now as it was in the original Pokemon Red & Blue.
