While you’re smartly self-isolating from the coronavirus this summer, wouldn’t it be a great idea to write that tabletop roleplaying game adventure you’ve always wanted to? Then sign up for the Summer 2020 RPG Writer Workshop. Registration for the 31-day course begins on July 1st and is open until July 3rd.
According to the website, the RPG Writer Workshop “is an online learning community dedicated to helping tabletop RPG creators write, publish, and create new adventures and campaigns! The Workshop offers courses, forums, and resources for creators in the tabletop roleplaying industry.”
During July, Workshop participants will receive written lessons with downloadable worksheets that will guide them in creating, writing, producing, and publishing a one-shot adventure for the tabletop RPG system of their choice. The Workshop lessons unlock during the four-week course, allowing participants to log in and complete each lesson at their own pace and time.
The Workshop offers three paths for participants to choose from: Free, Premium Path-General, and Premium Path-DMs Guild Edition. The Free Path is, of course, free, and is designed for those who may not be ready to take on a full writing course, but just want to get a taste of what the Workshop is about. The General and DMs Guild Premium Paths are priced at $29.00 each, and offer an increasing number of benefits, as shown in the following diagram.
The first week of this summer’s Workshop (July 1-7) will be focused on Planning and Organizing, and is when participants will gather their tools and create the outline of their planned adventure. Crafting A Narrative is the focus of the second week (July 8-16), where narrative design lessons and the bulk of the adventure writing happens. The basics of Playtesting and Design lessons occur during the third week (July 17-22), and the final week (July 23-31) covers the Editing, Marketing, and Publishing aspects of the Workshop.
During this year’s summer course, the RPG Writer Workshop will be donating 10% of the summer proceeds to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Workshop has also set up a continual donation and subscription to FIYAH Magazine, “a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features stories by and about Black people of the African Diaspora.”
