The UK gaming industry has banded together to give away 85,000 games and game subscriptions to NHS workers for free.
Pretty much nobody’s life is the same today as it was two months ago. Whether people are stuck at home, have lost their job, or even lost a loved one, the COVID-19 outbreak continues to affect just about everyone in some way. However, perhaps the most affected by the pandemic are those fighting it on the front lines in hospitals and other medical facilities.
People are doing all that they can to support healthcare workers, whether it be donating money or simply supporting a friend or family member after a long day. As for the video game industry, at least in the UK, companies have teamed up to try and help doctors, nurses, and anyone else who works in the NHS take their minds off of their job after they punch out.
Video Games Chronicle’s Chris Scullion was given a code to give away to a follower, at which point someone suggested giving it to an NHS worker. When three or four NHS workers asked for the code, Scullion got an idea. To give free games to as many NHS workers as possible. It was when he got in touch with the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment, or Ukie, that things really started to get going.
Ukie used its connections in the industry and before long, the Games for Carers program had 85,000 codes to give away. Companies taking part include EA, Activision, Konami, THQ, and so many more. The titles range across multiple platforms, genres, and age ratings, depending on whether workers plan on playing the games with their families or on their own.
The Games for Carers website is live now and anyone who works for the NHS can apply for their free game. All they need to do is enter their name and email address on the site and they will receive an email telling them how they can choose their game. There are already 85,000 codes available, and more coming, so even if you work for the NHS and have only just heard about this initiative, it isn’t too late to claim your free game.
