Earlier this year, The Walking Dead fans were treated to The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, a well-received VR survival game set in The Walking Dead universe. However, Saints and Sinners isn’t the only Walking Dead VR game for 2020. Fans can also look forward to The Walking Dead: Onslaught, which has gotten its first real gameplay trailer along with a release date that reveals when it will launch across multiple VR platforms.
As revealed by The Walking Dead: Onslaught trailer, the game will be available on September 29 for PSVR, Oculus, and other PC VR headsets like Valve Index and HTC Vive. The game will be a story-driven experience set in the same universe as the AMC TV show as opposed to the comic books. Players will take control of familiar characters from the show and be able to utilize their iconic weapons, with a number of playable characters shown off in the trailer.
The playable characters confirmed by the trailer include Daryl Dixon, Michonne, and Rick Grimes. It’s unclear exactly where in The Walking Dead timeline this game takes place, but it’s safe to say that it’s prior to the big time-skip. It could be just after the Negan arc, or maybe before it. Fans may have to wait for the game itself to come out before they learn more specific details about its story.
As far as gameplay goes, The Walking Dead: Onslaught looks about how many fans would expect a VR Walking Dead game to look. Players will be able to utilize motion controls to swing melee weapons at zombies, including Michonne’s iconic sword. They will also be able to shoot zombies with other characters’ signature weapons from The Walking Dead TV show, like Daryl’s crossbow and Rick’s magnum.
The Walking Dead: Onslaught looks like it has potential, and fans don’t have to wait too much longer to see if it lives up to the hype. Meanwhile, there’s plenty more Walking Dead to look forward to for the second half of 2020. Not even a week after The Walking Dead: Onslaught release date of September 29, fans can look forward to The Walking Dead Season 10 finally returning to television. It will be followed up by six additional episodes that will air in the first half of 2021, which should ensure fans have plenty of content between now and when Season 11 can finally premiere.
Whether or not The Walking Dead: Onslaught lives up to the expectations set by Saints and Sinners remains to be seen, but it’s definitely something VR enthusiasts should keep on their radars.
The Walking Dead: Onslaught launches on September 29 for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and Valve Index.
