Everyone loves to study the strongest Pokemon. It’s fascinating to see which gigantic Legendary has the best attack stat or which defensive behemoth can tank the most attacks with its super-high defense stat. Less attention is given, though, to the worst of the worst.

The Pokemon with the lowest stats are usually the subject of ridicule since they’re so weak that they can barely last longer than a few seconds in even the easiest battles. But, maybe we should take some time to celebrate the weaklings in the Pokemon universe. Let’s look at the Pokemon with the lowest base stat totals, and maybe even examine some positive characteristics they have.

8 Generation I: Caterpie and Weedle

The first Pokemon that many new trainers will catch on their journeys are Caterpie and Weedle. These two small Bug-types are some of the first Pokemon you can encounter in the Kanto region, providing the basis for teams of the first few trainers you’ll fight as well.

Caterpie and Weedle will both go on to evolve into some of the most iconic Pokemon in the series — Butterfree and Beedrill. Until then, though, they’re pretty weak. Both Weedle and Caterpie had a base stat total of just 175 in Gen I before the special split in Gen II, where they were upgraded to 195. However, this didn’t change their status as the weakest Pokemon in Gen I.

7 Generation II: Sunkern

Poor Sunkern. This little seed-like Grass-type from Generation II has one of the lowest base stat totals of any Pokemon to this day. At 180, it actually held the title for the lowest base stat total until Generation VII. Even after it evolves into Sunflora, it doesn’t get much better. Sunflora has a base stat total of 425, which isn’t horrible, but isn’t stellar either, especially since a quarter of it is in a single stat — special attack.

Sunkern, though, excels in another way. The Pokeathlon, introduced in the Generation II remakes. Sunkern joins Giratina’s Origin Form, Mew, and Ditto as the only Pokemon capable of max stats in the Pokeathlon, which is hilarious.

6 Generation III: Azurill

Baby Pokemon typically have very bad stats, but none of them as bad as Azurill’s. This Baby Pokemon, which was just a Normal-type before being converted to Normal/Fairy, has the lowest base stat total of all Baby Pokemon and all Gen III Pokemon.

Little Azurill’s base stat total measures only 190, with HP being its best stat at a still-meager 50 points. Luckily, Azurill is sometimes equipped with the Huge Power ability, which doubles its attack stat. It may still be a bit weak, but it’s better than nothing.

5 Generation IV: Kricketot

Many of the early-game insects for each region (they all have at least one) are known for having incredibly-low base stat totals. We already saw Caterpie and Weedle, but their Gen IV friend joins them on this list as well. Kricketot, the Bug-type from Sinnoh, has a base stat total of just 194.

While Kricketot’s base stat total is definitely toward the bottom of the ranking across the series, it isn’t the lowest. The same can’t be said for its evolution, Kricketune, though, who has the lowest base stat total of all fully-evolved Pokemon.

4 Generation V: Patrat

While each region has its own early-game insect, each also has its own early-game rodent. There was Rattata in Kanto, Sentret in Johto, and so on. These Pokemon are also pretty weak, but usually not as weak as the different bugs.

However, the rodent surpasses the bug in Unova, with Patrat being the Pokemon with the lowest base stat total in Generation V, sitting behind Sewaddle’s 310, with a measly 255.

Poor Patrat may be the weakest Pokemon in Generation V, but it’s at least the strongest on this list!

3 Generation VI: Scatterbug

Back to the bugs! The regional insect for the Kalos region is Scatterbug, which has the lowest base stat total of any Gen VI Pokemon at a meager 200 points. This poor little thing doesn’t even have a stat that stands out, with each of them being 40 or lower.

Luckily, this Pokemon will evolve into a decent sweeper. At level 12, it will have fully evolved into its final form, Vivillon, which has several different forms, all of which are beautiful. With access to moves like Sleep Powder and Quiver Dance alongside pretty nice speed and special attack, Vivillon is a decent budget choice for a sweeper on your team.

2 Generation VII: Wishiwashi

Alola’s regional bug, regional bird, and regional rodent all escape the fate so many of their brethren face in other regions. In Alola, the weakest Pokemon title goes to Wishiwashi, a Water-type fish Pokemon whose entire gimmick is its pathetic stats.

Wishiwashi has the lowest base stat total of any Pokemon in existence at 175, finally replacing Sunkern’s after 17 years.

However, Wishiwashi is redeemed by its ability once it’s level 20, Schooling, which groups it up with other Wishiwashi to form a huge beast in battle. This School Form of Wishiwashi has a base stat total of 620, rivaling many Legendaries. Unfortunately, once its health drops below the 25% threshold, it switches back to its sad solo form.

1 Generation VIII: Blipbug

After looking at so many of the regional early-game insects, it’s only fitting that the final entry on this list is one of them. Blipbug, the Bug-type from the Galar region, ranks as the lowest base stat total for a Pokemon in that region. Blipbug’s base stat total is only 180 points, tying it with Sunkern.

It definitely benefits from evolution more than some other regional insects, though. Its final form, Orbeetle, has a base stat total of 505 and has a nice type combination of Bug/Psychic, as well as a Gigantamax form.
