There are many decisions that Geralt must make in The Witcher 3, several of which can significantly alter the outcome of war, love, and the lives of many. Several quests and points in the story involve a decision that can sway the tides of entire countries and the relationships they have with one another.

But, making the wrong decision can lead you down a path you’ll regret. The outcomes of some of your decisions can leave a lasting effect on your psyche as you grapple with the guilt of something horrible resulting from your actions. Here are the decisions we’ve made in The Witcher 3 that haunt us to this day.

10 Sending Ciri To Her Death

One of the final decisions that must be made at the end of the game’s story arc is one that will determine the fate of Ciri. Through various quests, a dialogue choice here and there can determine Ciri’s overall ending. If the right answers are chosen, Ciri will go on to become an empress or a witcher.

However, if you choose the dialogue options that lead to a bad ending, Ciri will die. This ending also sees Geralt overwhelmed by monsters in the swamp, leaving his own fate unknown.

9 Helping Hjalmar

During Skellige’s questline, Geralt can help sway who will be the new ruler of the Skellige isles following the death of the King. If he decides to help Cerys an Craite, the land of Skellige will prosper. Cerys will avoid raiding the other countries nearby and focus inward on Skellige itself, uniting the clans.

If the witcher decides to side with her brother, Hjalmar, the true killer of the attacks in the hall will never be found and brought to justice. Hjalmar will then raid Nilfgaard frequently, sacrificing his own people. This leads to a higher number of lost lives and may leave you with a serious pang of guilt.

8 Losing Triss or Yennefer

Throughout the game, Geralt will be able to make certain decisions that lead to a long-lasting romance with either Yennefer or Triss. If he attempts to win the hearts of both, he’ll end up alone as they catch on to his games.

However, one might regret their choice. Perhaps you chased Triss, just to realize you actually prefer Yennefer. Sure, the consequences aren’t as dire as some of the other entries on this list, but it might still lead to some regret.

7 Anabelle

One of the creepiest storylines in the game concerns Fyke Isle and its haunted tower. Geralt will be tasked with investigating what happened during a massacre on the island.

Geralt realizes the curse surrounds a ghost named Anabelle’s clinging spirit and that she has to forgive her lover, Graham, who left her alone, in order to lift the curse. Geralt has to make a decision on how to lift the curse, but the outcomes are grim. In one, Graham dies and joins Anabelle in the afterlife. In another, Anabelle kills Graham and is free to roam the land and spread the plague as a plague maiden.

6 Killing the Mages

Triss Merigold is currently residing in Novigrad and trying to find a way to help the resident mages escape persecution. She asks Geralt for help, and a questline ensues. Depending on how Geralt acts, different outcomes are possible.

If you choose to help smuggle out the mages, Margarita will die, but Geralt can still romance Triss and determine the outcome of the war. If the mages are abandoned, Margarita can be saved, but the other mages will be killed and Radovid will win the war.

5 Letting Triss Be Tortured

Part of the time Geralt spends in Novigrad with Triss will involve trying to save their friend Dandelion. They’ll need to interrogate Caleb Menge, but different actions will either save Triss from being tortured or send her to the torture chamber.

In order to avoid sending Triss to be tortured and listening to her screams from the next room, Geralt will have to tread carefully. If you end up listening to her pain, it’ll haunt you for a while.

4 Spare Whoreson Jr.

Geralt eventually learns that Ciri got involved with Whoreson Junior, one of the crime lords of Novigrad’s underground. After finding his hideout, it’s clear that he derives a sick pleasure from harming and assaulting women, including mutilating them.

After getting the information he needs about Ciri, Geralt is left with the decision to kill Whoreson Junior or spare him. Those who want to take the high road might choose to give him mercy, but they’ll have to live with the fact that he can attack women again. Killing him could spare countless lives.

3 Letting Keira Die

Throughout the time he spent with Keira, Geralt will come to learn that she used him to get her hands on some research that she had been seeking. Keira will want to bring plague research to Radovid in order to get back in his good graces. Geralt tries to stop her, and three outcomes are possible.

If he flat out refuses, they’ll fight, and Keira will die at your hand. If he lets her go to Radovid, he’ll later find her body impaled on a stake, which will really mess you up. Perhaps the least guilt-ridden decision is the third: convincing her to head to Kaer Morhen, where she’ll help in the fight against Eredin at the end of the game.

2 Downwarren

As part of the quest to save the Baron’s wife, Anna, from the Crones in the Crookback Bog, Geralt will need to either free or fight a spirit trapped in a tree near the village of Downwarren.

Regardless of what you choose here, bad things can happen. If the spirit is free, Anna is turned into a water hag. The spirit will go to Downwarren and drive the villagers insane, ending with them killing each other. This is obviously regrettable. If you kill the spirit, though, the orphans will die. It’s a tough choice that will haunt you.

1 The Crones

There’s another outcome to the same questline involving the Whispering Hillock and the Crones that can leave some negative feelings with you for a long time. This concerns the fate of the Baron and his wife, Anna.

Depending on the choices Geralt makes with the associated quests, a few things can happen. The Baron and Anna can both survive, but Anna will have been driven to insanity. They’ll leave to find a healer. Another ending results in Anna dying, and Geralt will then find the Baron has hung himself from a tree. Either way, the Baron’s sergeant will take over and pillage Velen.
