The Witcher 3 is one of the most popular games of all times, at least when it comes to fantasy games or those offering an open world to the players. There are many reasons why it’s so successful, one of which is that it includes plenty of great characters that are sympathetic, funny, and/or smart.
One such character is none other than Geralt’s friend Dandelion, the famous bard, who also tries to help Ciri throughout the game and whom Geralt meets when he arrives in the city of Novigrad. However, even though Dandelion is such a popular hero, there are some things about him that don’t make sense and the fans were quick to point it out in memes.
10 Always Chatting
One fact that rings true about Dandelion is that he’s a very expressive person. He likes to talk and talk, which can sometimes be annoying, especially for people who don’t know him very well. But it also drives Geralt crazy from time to time, despite the fact that he and Dandelion are great friends. But even though Dandelion can be a bit annoying, the fans still — sometimes somewhat inexplicably — love him and consider him one of the best characters in The Witcher. Possibly thanks to Dandelion’s many qualities.
9 Not So Anonymous Writer
Dandelion is an artist, and as such, there’s no-one more qualified who should write all the information about the characters, quests, and beasts that the player finds in the game. Dandelion’s love of language and his play with words really shine through if the fans find enough time to actually read his notes. But despite the fact that Dandelion provides all the important background details, Dandelion himself actually doesn’t have that big a part in the game — to the disappointment of all his fans.
8 Missing Music
Dandelion is a popular bard who often enters contests and whose ballads are well-known. That’s why it can come across as strange that he never really plays his music in the game. Yes, The Witcher 3 is a lot about action but there are also some more peaceful scenes in Novigrad where Dandelion establishes his business, and a musical number of everyone’s favorite bard would add a lot to the game’s charm.
7 The Mystery Of His Name
It won’t come as a surprise to Dandelion’s fans that Dandelion isn’t his real name. But what makes less sense than choosing an artistic name is the fact that he has several aliases in various media. In some translation of the books, he’s called Marigold, similarly to Triss Merigold.
In the Netflix show, he’s Jaskier. But the games went for Dandelion, making a proper mess of the whole matter (even though Dandelion and Jaskier mean the same thing, not everybody knows this).
6 Clothes Make The Man
Unlike his good friend Geralt who hates going to parties and putting on fancy clothes because he doesn’t feel comfortable in them, Dandelion is always well-dressed. Maybe a bit too well sometimes, especially when he’s running from his enemies, instead of just chilling out, playing music, and seducing women. Dandelion’s attire is an important part of his personality but sometimes it would be more sensible to choose less flashy clothes.
5 Far-Fetched Plan
Sometimes it can come across as surprising that Geralt and Dandelion are such good friends. After all, they both have an entirely different approach to life. Geralt is much more serious while Dandelion is the one bound to come up with crazy schemes. Such as when he decided to get money for his business Cabaret by pretending to be a hero called the Crimson Avenger and saving a woman from a bandit (poorly played by Geralt). One would say such a far-fetched plan could never work, but, surprise surprise, it actually does.
4 True Love
As hinted above, Dandelion is a bit of a womanizer who has the talent to break heart wherever he goes. However, he finally meets his match in a fellow bard, Priscilla, who beats him at a contest.
What’s somewhat confusing, though, how exactly did Dandelion manage to get one of the loveliest women in the game, especially considering his past? Priscilla is not only beautiful, but also smart, ambitious, loving, and has a voice like a nightingale. Some mysteries are just too difficult to ever be uncovered.
3 Best Friends
Speaking of Dandelion’s relationships, there’s also his iconic friendship with Geralt (and some fans believe these two are more than just friends and like to ship them). It’s true that opposites do attract but when one looks at Dandelion and Geralt standing side by side, it’s a small miracle these two are such good friends, considering their highly different personalities. Still, for someone who claims to be such a good friend to Geralt, Dandelion spends very little time with him, especially once Geralt leaves Novigrad.
2 Best Intentions
Dandelion has only good intentions where his friends are concerned… and that includes Ciri as well. Unfortunately, he doesn’t always make the right call, even though he should have known better by now. After all, he’s not a child anymore and had plenty of time to learn. Yet despite all that, Dandelion still considers it acceptable to bring Ciri to Whoreson Junior, one of the biggest psychopaths the game has, and ask him for his help. This couldn’t have ended any other way than in blood.
1 Liar, Liar, Lute On Fire
If anybody needs any further proof that Geralt has the patience of a saint, here it comes. Not only does he continuously rescue Dandelion when his bard friend ends up in trouble (which is a lot), but he also tolerates the fact that Dandelion is telling nonsense about him to people. Sometimes, when Dandelion wants to make a good impression or charm a lady, he tells a story of his and Geralt’s adventure, but in this version, Dandelion is the hero who has to save Geralt. It’s a wonder anybody believes him considering how well-known Geralt is and the fact that he’s a witcher who specializes in solving problems — not like Dandelion.
