CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt debuted five years ago. Despite its age, it is still commonly used as a benchmark to compare modern RPGs with. Renown for its highly immersive gameplay and moral complexity, the third installment is one that players have sunk countless hours into.

Regardless of how much playtime you have in The Witcher 3, it is likely that you haven’t seen everything it has to offer. Sprinkled around its vibrant world are many easter eggs, both to the franchise and pop culture in general. There are some which are more obvious than others, such as Ciri teasing Cyberpunk 2077, but not all of them are so easy to find.

10 The Goblet Of Fire

In the ‘Hearts of Stone’ expansion, Geralt of Rivia is tasked with retrieving Borsodi’s house for Olgierd von Everec. The quest’s requirements meant the White Wolf had to attend an auction house where various trinkets could be purchased.

Included in this list was The Professor’s glasses from the first Witcher game. But if you look around enough, you will also see the Goblet of Fire from Harry Potter locked away in a display case.

9 “My Brother Gave Me A Sword, I Named It Needle”

It wouldn’t really be a fantasy game without some kind of Game of Thrones Easter egg, would it? The Witcher 3 has an abundance of easter eggs that nod towards the beloved books and TV show. One such reference that a lot of players found was a dwarven body that looked eerily like Tyrion Lannister.

In the ‘Blood and Wine’ expansion, however, there is a subtler reference. When wandering Touissant, Geralt overhears a little girl saying “my brother gave me a sword, I named it Needle.” This is a reference to when Jon Snow gives his sister Arya Stark a sword, which she calls Needle.

8 The Ghost Ship Of Skellige

While many easter eggs in the game can be found at almost any time, there are some which only appear at certain moments. One example of this is the ghost ship in Skellige. While sailing the waters near either An Skellig or Hindarsfjall after approximately 1 AM, a transparent ghost ship can be seen. It can’t actually be engaged with, but it is nice to find after you’ve beaten the game.

7 David Attenborough

Sir David Attenborough is one of the world’s most cherished natural historians. He has made countless documentaries and shows to raise environmental awareness.  Interestingly, he is even referenced in The Witcher 3.

During Hearts of Stone, Geralt needs to give Olgierd’s brother one last night to remember. Throughout the course of this quest, he meets a fire eater named David Artensborrow. After mistaking two animals, he states “I’m not a naturalist”.

6 Smigole Serkis

There are multiple references to The Lord of the Rings in The Witcher 3, such as when Zoltan tells Geralt “you have me and my axe!” after asking for his help to defend Ciri at Kaer Morhen.

In Blood and Wine though, there is another Lord of the Rings easter egg. Geralt can find a note written by Smigole Serkis who has lost his ‘precious’ spoon. This is a nod to Gollum, who loses the One Ring, and the actor who portrays him, Andy Serkis.

5 Fawlty Towers

Fawlty Towers is a very popular British sitcom from the 1970s. The show was based on the antics of a hotel owner with little patience for rude customers. Basil Fawlty is actually alluded to in The Witcher 3’s second expansion.

During Blood and Wine, Geralt is given a vineyard in Corvo Bianco. His ‘majordomo’ (the person who looks after the property) is called Barnabas-Basil Foulty, a clear reference to the beloved sitcom.

4 Pulp Fiction’s ‘Gimp’

Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction movie is a cult classic that has been referenced countless times in many different mediums. It shouldn’t be too surprising to read that it is even alluded to in The Witcher 3.

When Geralt is in the basement of Crow’s Perch, you can overhear two guards talking about someone. They say they need to wake up the ‘gimp’ which is a clear reference to one of the most famous scenes in Pulp Fiction.

3 H.P. Lovecraft

Renown literary author H.P. Lovecraft’s works have inspired many books, movies, and games. Known for creating and writing about abstract creatures, his writings served as a basis for many stories like FromSoftware’s Bloodborne.

There are several references to H.P. Lovecraft in The Witcher 3. The first of which is a note that references The Call of Cthulhu. The second one is an in-game book called ‘Necronomicon’ which is a fictional book contained in Lovecraft’s own works.

2 The Island Of Dr. Moreau

In Blood and Wine, the ‘mutations’ mechanic was introduced. This allowed players to use both ability points and mutagens to unlock ‘mutation’ skills. The scientific genius behind such a discovery is known as Dr. Moreau. This is a reference to H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau.

1 Time Of Contempt

This easter egg is one that hardcore Witcher fans will truly appreciate. It references Andrzej Sapkowski’s Time of Contempt novel. The Polish author’s books are the source material for the games themselves. Time of Contempt is the second novel in the series, though chronologically, it is the fourth book released.

During Time of Contempt, Ciri meets someone who is trying to sell a Basilisk, but it is actually a Wyvern. This scene is alluded to in The Witcher 3, where Geralt can encounter a man with a caged Wyvern. He is also trying to flog this creature off as a Basilisk.
