There are only a few open-world games as amazing and popular as The Witcher. The base game itself was already pretty epic, with its many quests and the main heroes desperately trying to come up with a way how to defeat the all-too powerful Wild Hunt.
However, the addition to the game, Hearts of Stone, also has a lot to offer. Geralt visits the city of Oxenfurt and faces new unexpected threats and enemies. Even though the story itself isn’t so long, it still features plenty of memorable moments and characters. But it also included some things that don’t make that much sense - and the fans noticed and made memes about them.
10 A Disappointed Wife
One of the scariest and most significant quests in the Hearts of Stone concerns Olgierd von Everec’s wife Iris. Olgierd asks Geralt to bring him the rose he once gave to Iris. When Geralt goes to their manor, he learns that Iris had already died and is haunting the house. What’s more, he gets a glimpse into the couple’s past and learns that Olgierd killed Iris’ father. Yet when Geralt and Iris speak for the first time, Iris is, for whatever reason, disappointed that Geralt and not Olgierd came to the house, as if she miraculously forgot her previous scorn for her husband.
9 Poor Roach
Hearts of Stone is different from the base game in more ways than one but one thing that hasn’t changed and continues not to make sense is Roach’s approach to enemies. When Geralt is fighting dangerous bosses, Roach is usually somewhere around, waiting patiently for Geralt to come back. But when Geralt and Roach encounter a slight obstacle on the road, Roach is usually quick to make her displeasure known and sometimes can’t even go on.
8 Lazy Villain
Gaunter O’Dimm is the main big baddie of Hearts of Stones. Yet he turns out to be surprisingly lazy and lets Geralt do most of his dirty work. Of course, if O’Dimm just went and did everything by himself, the game would be over in a blink of an eye. Still, even though Gaunter O’Dimm likes to hang around and watch Geralt’s progress, he seems to enjoy it when other people have no choice but to do his bidding, no matter what he wants from them.
7 Clumsy Witcher
Another thing that continues not to make sense in the DLC is Geralt’s clumsiness when it comes to jumping, or, really, falling, from heights. He can easily take on many powerful monsters, including the Toad Prince, for example…
But put a platform, high wall, or a rock before him and Geralt suddenly loses all the traits that make him such an amazing witcher and ends up splattered instead.
6 Medic With A Lack Of Job
When Geralt arrives at Oxenfurt, he quickly meets his friend Shani. Shani is a medic and a healer who, according to her words, is busy helping the wounded soldiers fighting at the frontlines. Yet she finds a lot of time for helping Geralt whenever he asks for it and even goes to a wedding with Geralt (well, with Vlodimir von Everec in Geralt’s body) and generally spends a lot of time doing anything else but her job.
5 The Most Dangerous Enemy
Who’s the most dangerous enemy Geralt can come across during his journey in Hearts of Stone? It’s not O’Dimm or the Toad Prince or any of the monsters he takes contracts on. Instead, he can easily lose his life when he comes across a pack of wild boars and isn’t careful enough. What can be done — those wild boars sure are wild, but Geralt still should have been able to stop them without losing.
4 Bad Dad
It’s true that Geralt is busy fighting enemies and killing monsters in Hearts of Stone. He even gets captured one and has to accept O’Dimm’s help to get out of the pickle.
But for such a concerned adoptive father who spent weeks, if not months searching for Ciri when she was running from the Wild Hunt, he doesn’t even mention her once. And he also doesn’t bother to try to get in touch with her — even though she could be of great help to him. Speaking of which…
3 A Lone Wolf
Geralt can do a lot of things on his own but even the most powerful witcher needs some help from time to time. And even though Shani aids Geralt in Hearts of Stone, she isn’t of much use when it comes to fighting. There are some other people who could help Geralt, though, such as Yennefer or the above-mentioned Ciri. Yennefer has asked for Geralt’s help before but she doesn’t bother to visit and see how her friend/lover is doing. That makes Geralt not only a White Wolf but also a Lone Wolf.
2 Ill-Advised Couple
In the base game, Geralt can choose between romancing Yennefer or Triss (or he can be greedy and end up with neither of the women). But if he does romance Yennefer or Triss, he can still end up having a brief romance with Shani in Hearts of Stone. And funnily enough, he doesn’t care in the slightest that he’s already taken.
1 Friendship Over
Finally, there’s the whole question of Geralt siding over with Olgierd von Everec and standing against Gaunter O’Dimm. Truth be told, neither of these men is a particularly good person. Gaunter O’Dimm is a devil but he still gives people what they ask him for. And Olgierd drove his own wife to death. So no matter which option the player goes for, there are always going to be valid reasons why he could have chosen differently as well.
