Saving the world and killing monsters is tough and all, but all Witcher fans know that the toughest decision Geralt will ever face has always been: Triss or Yennefer? How did this happen? In the books, there was only mainly Yennefer. Then CD Projekt RED proved to anyone that redheads can be just as viable in-game girlfriends as brunettes.

Needless to say, Triss Merigold got her huge upgrade in all three Witcher games– enough to rally half the fanbase against Team Yennefer in a neverending waifu war. Now, since certain liberties were taken with Triss’ characterization, she also became a target of memes from the fans. Some of these memes are of adoration and others poke fun at her but all of them add fuel to the Triss vs. Yennefer war. Here are those memes.

9 Which Triss is the real Triss?

Netflix tends to have a notorious reputation for adaptations (thanks, Death Note) and this sadly extended to The Witcher series. Most of the controversy happened ever before the show’s release thanks to castings, particularly for Triss.

Much of the backlash was due to fans likely getting spoiled by CD Projekt RED’s crimson-haired hottie version that actress Anna Shaffer’s paled in comparison. The meme pretty much explains the fans’ sentiments toward the live-action version. Regardless, she’s still a decent Triss.

8 50 Shades Of Red

Triss’ hair pretty much became fuel for hatred of Netflix’s The Witcher. Probably because Anna Shaffer’s hair was more brown than red, but oddly enough, book fans came to the rescue as they know full well that Triss was barely a redhead in the books.

Her hair was often considered as chestnut or auburn-colored, which means Anna Shaffer’s Triss is more accurate hair-wise. If anything, however, it proves just how CD Projekt RED’s Triss became the more liked and more definitive one.

7 What Happened Here?

While not exactly an accurate or respectable representation of Triss’ deteriorating status in the games, this one’s still worth at least a chuckle. Triss wasn’t exactly the most powerful sorceress in the Lodge but she was still talented enough to compete with her peers.

That’s why it was surprising to see her reduced to a mere ratcatcher for some underground cartels in Novigrad. It shows the big difference between her and Yennefer when it comes to preserving their lifestyles. Still, one has to give credit to Triss, she tried to stay nice and fair.

6 Short End Of The Stick

Speaking of nice, that’s the first adjective Team Triss fans use to describe her. Well, she is nice, especially in the third game when she risked her life to save countless mages. However, the best description for her likely wouldn’t have taken off if not for Yennefer.

Triss is only described as nice because, by contrast, Yennefer is abrasive. Yet Yennefer can still prove that her heart’s in the right place when push comes to shove. Probably why the fan reasons for Team Yennefer is longer and more complex.

5 The Outfit

For context, Triss (in the books) suffered some major wounds in the Battle of Sodden Hill where she was even presumed dead. She obviously survived but swore that she can never wear clothes with plunging necklines ever again due to the nature of her injury.

Then there’s Triss in the games who just doesn’t care about her past wounds and let it all out. Well, in her defense, it was probably her last chance to pry away Geralt from Yennefer’s arms so she had to make some adjustments. In any case, this lore-breaking costume design for Triss was one of CD Projekt RED’s most glaring oversights.

4 What’s Hers Is Mine

Sounds about right. Triss, true to her books, never cared much for the boundaries set by Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship. She just kept trying over and over again, throwing herself at Geralt whenever Yennefer’s away.

Some might say that the game version wasn’t that desperate but they have to remember that Triss practically lied to Geralt and betrayed him and Yennefer in the first game. It’s safe to say she retained that negative quality, though given how “available” Geralt is to sorceresses, he might as well assume the title “Lodge’s Boyfriend.”

3 Don’t You Dare Lay A Finger On Her

Love or hate her, Triss has changed for the better in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. Besides, she has always been one of Geralt’s oldest friends. That’s why when the Radovid’s Witch Hunters tortured her, all hell just had to break loose.

Most players likely chose to rage out rather than let Triss get tortured and even when they do choose that latter option, most will still exact vengeance on those sadistic inquisitors. They had it coming, and it’s really hard to let Triss be tortured especially when Geralt has a more viable and effective alternative in the form of sword dancing.

2 Behind The Scenes

The most memorable in-game moment concerning Ciri’s reunion is not finding Ciri itself but rather witnessing what happens when Yennefer and Triss see her again. Triss hugs her, normally, but then Yennefer, the audacious witch that she is, goes all licky-licky with Geralt in front of Triss.

Thankfully, Triss took it like a champ and seemingly brushed it off regardless of who Geralt is in a relationship with between the two sorceresses. Well, at least that’s what Triss wanted everyone to think, in reality, Ciri might have gotten shocked at how much Triss missed her with a sudden bear hug.

1 Red Hair, Red Flags?

As a testament of just how much game Triss has improved from her book Triss, here’s a well-drawn comic/meme explaining the nuances. It best sums up the differences, down the hair, and even the desperation.

The second panel is no joke either, Triss really did propose indecently to Geralt many times– once even inside a stinking stable after not seeing the witcher for a while. It should be hard to find any self-respecting person in Team Triss preferring the Triss in the right panel, right? Right?
