Many creatures and monsters are held within the Bestiary in The Witcher 3, and Harpies are one of them. Players will encounter these hideous creatures throughout the game, and they are not easy to defeat. There are some things that players should know before entering into a fight they came unprepared to win.
Luckily, this list lays out the key facts about Harpies that players should know in order to understand their nature. It will still be a difficult fight, but it will no longer be impossible to win. Keep reading to learn a few things about the Harpies in The Witcher 3.
10 It Has A Woman’s Head And A Bird’s Body
A Harpy is described as having a bird’s body and a woman’s head, but they are quite repulsive. Not only are they difficult to look at, but they also carry a stench with them that consists of rot and bird droppings.
Their nests smell even worse, but players often know they are nearby because of this combined with their horrific screeches.
9 It Is Classified As A Hybrid
This creature is classified as a Hybrid in the game, as it is a combination of two creatures into one. Others in this class include things like the Ekhidna, Griffin, Melusine, Salma, and Siren.
They are all fairly different from one another as they exist on land, in the sky, and beneath the sea, but each is more deadly than the last.
8 They Can Usually Be Found In The Highlands
Harpies are often found in the Highlands, which is really anywhere with high cliffs and deep ravines. They choose to nest in these areas as it is easy for them to spot and swarm their prey and use height to their advantage.
A few signs players can look for in regards to their presence are things like remains of animals and humans, as well as feathers and bird droppings.
7 They Hunt In Flocks Of Up To Twenty
Many creatures fight alone, but Harpies like to hunt their prey in groups of up to 20. This can make them difficult to defeat as players are forced to split their attention in several ways as they take on more than one at a time.
These creatures usually attack when someone grows too close to their nests as they want to protect the items they have collected. Players should keep in mind that Harpies can attack from any direction as the way they swarm gives them an advantage from all sides.
6 They Dive At Their Opponents But Are Slow On The Ground
Harpies tend to dive at their opponents, but they are extremely slow on the ground. A player’s main goal should be to drop them from the sky during their dives before they can head up to heights out of a player’s reach.
When they are on the ground they are slow and clumsy, which makes them very easy to defeat.
5 Aard Is Very Useful Against Them
The Sign of Aard is very useful against these creatures as it will allow a player to drop the Harpies during their dive. It will stun them midflight which will make them an easy target to kill.
It is fairly impossible to win this fight without using this sign as this is the best way to continuously drop them when they grow too close.
4 Grapeshot And Hybrid Oil Are Also Great To Have
Grapeshot and Hybrid Oil are two items that players should have in their inventory before entering into a fight with these creatures. A player can only hold two Grapeshot bombs in a slot at a given time, but it will inflict plenty of damage on Harpies within its blast radius. It can be made using two parts Saltpeter and two parts Calcium Equum.
Hybrid Oil is also useful as it will increase a player’s attack power against these mythical creatures. This can be made using one part Dog Tallow and four parts White Myrtle Petals which can then be applied to a player’s sword.
3 It Is Added To The Bestiary By Reading “Journey To The End Of The World”
A Harpy is not added to a player’s bestiary until they read a book called Journey to the End of the World. The book can be found in the smallest house in the village called The Orphans of Crookback Bog, so players should consider searching for it before looking for these creatures.
It will also add a few decoction formulas, as well as Bestiary entries for things like Sirens, Erynias, and Succubi.
2 There Is A Harpy Gwent Card
The Harpy is not only one of the members of the Bestiary, but it is also a Gwent card. It is part of the Monsters Gwent deck, which gives the player the ability to keep a random Unit Card out after each round.
This card can be purchased from Harviken’s Innkeep and has the ability to be placed in either the Close Combat or Ranged Combat rows.
1 They Drop Useful Loot
This creature drops loot like any other and it is fairly useful to a player in terms of crafting. It will give them things like a Harpy Egg, Harpy Talons, Harpy Feathers, Lesser Blue Mutagen, Monster Liver, and Raw Meat.
These can be used to craft Blue Mutagens, Ursine Trousers, and a Griffin Steel Sword.
