The Witcher 3 is a dangerous world filled with monsters galore. One of these monsters is known as a Wyvern, and players should expect to encounter several as they make their way through the game. They are ferocious and should not be taken lightly, but there are also some tactics that can be used to defeat them.

There are some things players should know about Wyverns before heading into a fight with one before they know what to expect. The information on this list will make these creatures seem like a breeze as players will have all the tools they need to defeat them. Keep reading to learn a few things about the Wyverns in The Witcher 3!

10 It Is From The Draconid Class

The Wyvern is a member of the Draconid Class which is a group of reptilian beasts who create issues with humanoid races. Dragons are most commonly associated with this class, but it includes others such as Dracolizards, Forktails, and Vigilosaurs. These other species are not as intelligent as dragons, but they can be just as deadly as they have their own special abilities.

9 They Can Be Found Anywhere On The Continent

These creatures can be found anywhere on the continent and even in the Skellige Isles. Some say they are more prominent in the northeastern portion of Velen as that is where they nest, but players should always be prepared. They could appear at any moment and it is best to expect the worst especially when entering unfamiliar territory.

8 They Attack From The Skies

To combat strategy that Wyverns take is to attack their victims from the sky. These creatures will fly around their chosen prey until they will fly at top speeds toward the ground to attack. They will attempt to use their claws to rip into their opponent which can have detrimental effects on a player’s health.

7 Its Teeth Are Bad, But Its Tail Is Worse

When a Wyvern is on the ground its teeth are bad, but the effect its tail can have is even worse. The biggest tool it can use in a fight is its tail, which will inject venom into its opponent on contact.

They can also spit venom from a distance, but this can be avoided as long as a player is aware of it. The bites can be parried, although if a player misses the consequences can be deadly.

6 The Royal Wyverns Are The Most Dangerous

The Royal Wyvern is a variation of the breed that is more dangerous than any other. All of its original characteristics are amplified, meaning it is bigger, stronger, and more aggressive. It is part of the Phantom of the Trade Route contract and a player must kill it in order to stop it from attacking travelers and caravans traveling this way.

5 Crossbow Bolts Are Useless Against Them

Many players might think their crossbow is the best weapon to use against this creature, but they would be wrong. The Wyverns like to fly just out of range of these devices and dive too quickly for them to be of any use. They are also highly resistant to the bolts used in crossbows, making this weapon even less effective.

4 Aard And Grapeshot Can Be Used To Bring It Down

The first thing a player must do when in a fight with a Wyvern is to bring it down to the ground. The Sign of Aard is able to do this as it will help to knock them out of the air.

Grapeshot Bombs also have the same effect as it will inflict damage on the beast within a wide radius. This can be made using two parts Saltpeter and two parts Calcium Equum which a player has knowledge of once they reach the White Orchard.

3 Golden Oriole And Draconid Oil Are Crucial

Golden Oriole and Draconid Oil are also the difference between a win and a loss with these creatures. A swig of Golden Oriole prior to the fight will grant immunity to the poison that a Wyvern uses and it can be made using one part Dwarven Spirit, four parts Blowball, and one part Light Essence.

Draconid Oil increases the attack damage that can be done to a Wyvern which will allow the fight to end sooner than later. It is a fairly simple recipe that is comprised of one part Dog Tallow and four parts Ergot Seeds.

2 It’s Involved In Several Quests

It was already mentioned how a Royal Wyvern is met during a contract, but there are other quests where players will come face to face with these creatures. There is another contract called Patrol Gone Missing, a scavenger hunt called Griffin School Gear, and a secondary quest called The Most Truest of Basilisks.

1 They Drop Precious Loot

Wyverns are a dangerous creature to fight, which is why they drop a ton of loot for players. The list includes Dragon Scales, Monster Blood, Monster Bone, Monster Brain, Monster Claw, Monster Eye, Wyvern Egg, Wyvern Hide, Wyvern Mutagen, and Wyvern Trophy. The Royal Wyvern will also drop Anathema in addition to the other possible loot items.
