The Witcher 3 is undoubtedly one of the greatest video games of all time, with CD Projekt Red attaining the status of being a legendary developer after releasing their magnum opus. There are a multitude of reasons as to why this game is beloved by the majority of the gaming community — jaw-dropping visuals, an engrossing story, memorable side stories, and enthralling combat are just a few of the many aspects of this game that have garnered critical acclaim.

Of course, one can’t talk about the excellent aspects of The Witcher 3 without mentioning one of its crowning achievements — the characters. Geralt, Ciri, Triss, Dandelion, and — obviously enough — Yennefer are some of the most memorable characters introduced in the history of video games. However, our raven-haired sorcerer has raised a number of questions with her inclusion in the Witcher trilogy. Let’s take a deep dive into ten such puzzling aspects of Yennefer.

10 How Old Is Yennefer?

One point of major debate in the games centers around Yennefer’s age. While she looks like someone entering her 20s — she really is that gorgeous — Yennefer is almost a century old!

Since she was born in 1173 and the game takes place in 1271, it’s easy to say that Yennefer is 98 years old. However, nothing pertaining to her age is ever mentioned in the game, making one wonder if CD Projekt Red took some unspoken liberty with Yennefer’s age to make her youthful appearance all the more natural.

9 Why Is Yennefer Fine With Triss Taking Advantage Of An Amnesiac Geralt?

It’s a fairly popular sentiment among the fan base that Triss manipulated Geralt by not telling him about his past life and commencing a romantic relationship with him in his fragile state.

This is something that Yennefer should have a huge problem with, given her possessive nature… but, for the most part, it never seems like Yennefer has any major problems with Triss. For the most part, they seem jovial.

8 Why Did She Never Try And Contact Geralt?

One of the most puzzling aspects of Yennefer’s character is the fact that she never tried to search for or contact Geralt while the latter was suffering from amnesia. After all, it would’ve helped Geralt cope with his memory loss and return to his roots way sooner.

However, for some reason, Yennefer chooses to remain aloof instead, which makes no sense whatsoever… especially when she was supposed to be bound to Geralt!

7 Does Her Rough Upbringing Contribute To Her Rocky Relationship With Geralt?

Yennefer didn’t exactly enjoy the best childhood. Her father constantly berated her and beat her for being a hunchback, blaming her half-elf mother for the same. This culminated in Yennefer’s father abandoning the family for good, following which her mother started abusing her as well.

So, it’s definitely a probability that this unstable childhood is a major catalyst that ignites the fights between Geralt and Yennefer, whether directly or otherwise.

6 Is Yennefer Taking Care Of Ciri Because She Doesn’t Want Her To Endure Too Many Hardships?

Yennefer’s rough childhood could be part of the reason why she’s so protective of Ciri and looks out for her at any given opportunity.

Perhaps she doesn’t want an innocent kid to experience the same level of trauma and helplessness she experienced herself.

5 Why Did She Never Contact Ciri, Knowing That The Princess Of Cintra Is In Danger?

Geralt isn’t the only person Yennefer has conveniently ignored without a single care in the world. Readers of the book would be well aware of the fact that Yennefer was very close to Ciri, even treating her as her own daughter at times.

And yet, for some unfathomable reason, Yennefer never tries to re-establish contact with a person who — as per her character — she should be worried about.

4 Does Yennefer Truly Love Geralt?

The wish of a Djinn is what compelled Yennefer and Geralt to fall in love. In The Witcher 3, the duo decides to meet up with said Djinn and remove the magical bond connecting them once and for all. After this is done, the player can direct Geralt to enter a relationship with Yennefer… although that might not be the best path to take, given the circumstances.

After all, we’ve already discussed how Yennefer chose to abandon Geralt in his time of need, even with the bond active. This, coupled with the manner in which she’s oddly dismissive of Geralt at times, can lead one to believe that Yennefer never truly loved Geralt, and has seemingly resigned herself to the idea of being with him.

3 Would Geralt Be Dead At The Hands Of Yennefer If He Wasn’t A Witcher?

The fights between Yennefer and Geralt are the stuff of legends, with some of their altercations being quite physical and dangerous. After all, an unhinged sorceress is never a good sign.

Most people believe that Geralt would’ve perished in the aftermath of these fights had it not been for his superhuman Witcher strength, which makes us wonder whether our beloved character would survive a Yennefer temper tantrum had he been a regular human. Of course, one might argue that Geralt would not even be an important character at all without the power bestowed to him by his mutations.

2 Does Yennefer Have Borderline Personality Disorder?

While this might be attributed to the writers attempting to craft a character that’s prideful yet compassionate, there are times in the game when Yennefer’s personality switches at the drop of a hat.

As witnessed before with her infamous temper, Yennefer is prone to sudden bouts of anger that unleash the beast within her, leading many people to believe that the sorceress isn’t exactly right in the head. Given all the trauma she’s been exposed to as a child, this might just be a possibility.

1 How Morally Corrupt Is Yennefer?

Yennefer has a one-track mind, getting everything she wants whether by hook or by crook. However, this has led to some situations in both the books and the game where one might question her moral compass.

From bringing back the dead and causing them no end of agony to sacrificing anything and anybody in her way in her search of Ciri — it seems that Yennefer is more immoral than one might think.
