The Witcher 3, without its colorful and flawed cast of characters, would not have been as spectacularly perfect. Because apart from the impressive open-world and handcrafted quests, what makes the game so memorable are the characters’ quirks and their interactions with one another. With that in mind, it’s usually the dialogue lines that carry the narrative and hold your attention enough for it to not wander off into Gwent or side quests.

As a testament to the game’s masterfully written dialogue, each introductory line a main character blurts out carries more weight than literal words. It prefaces their personalities and roles in the story, making them quite iconic. Consequently, their final words are also heavy and give them a proper send-off that also sums up their development or comeuppance. As proof, here’s each main character’s first and last line in the main game. Expansion lines and characters are not included, gotta save that content for later.

10 Geralt

  • First: You know I don’t find that amusing.
  • Last: Not here. You’ll have that opportunity soon enough, Witcher.

Funny enough, Geralt’s first line in the game was from a dream with Yennefer. It’s that infamous bathtub Geralt scene where the sorceress teases him with a magical crab. It sets up the two’s relationship pretty well especially if you’re out of the loop.

Meanwhile, Geralt’s last line was plucked straight from the best ending of the game where he refused to give Ciri back to Emhyr. It was a rare moment when Geralt addressed Ciri as a witcher, marking the end of her fragmentary training and the start of something new for the two.

9 Ciri

  • First: Oof. That was close. I must leave this place.
  • Last: Let’s try it out then.

Ciri’s first appearance in the game was also revolutionary for a witcher title since we actually get to play her. Her immediate lines were that of an urgent need to escape after nearly getting turned to stew by the Crones. It also sums up her most powerful ability as well as her propensity for trouble.

As for Ciri’s last line, we picked the one in her best ending where Geralt hands her out a refined and more elegant version of the Swallow witcher sword. Ciri’s excitement and gratitude couldn’t be contained less with that quote.

8 Emhyr var Emreis:

  • First: I thought you bowed before no man.
  • Last: Witcher, I do not wish to see you ever again.

One character whose wisdom, tact, and arrogance are reflected well in his words is Emhyr var Emreis and he knows Geralt all too well. Enough to poke fun at the witcher after a clumsy royal bow in the emperor’s presence.

Their parting in the game, on the other hand, was not as humorous. Emhyr’s visible vexation at the witcher’s refusal to hand over Ciri is apparent enough.

7 Yennefer

  • First: Excuses, excuses… You’ve not changed a bit.
  • Last: And don’t get killed, witcher.

After being absent for two games, Yennefer was set up with a perfect delivery to encapsulate her relationship with Geralt. The result is a cold familiarity that somewhat explains the context even if you’re new to the game.

As abrasive and forbidding as Yennefer can be, she actually grew as a character assuming Geralt pursued her as a romantic option. Yennefer made plans with Geralt included, to settle down in a peaceful countryside place. Her last lines are not much but that’s just her way of saying she loves Geralt.

6 Triss

  • First: Geralt…?
  • Last: I love you, you know.

In contrast to Yennefer’s icy demeanor, Triss is a warm splash of sunlight; a character whose feelings are worn on her skin. So when she unceremoniously gets reunited with her ex (Geralt), she can’t help but question the situation’s legitimacy with doe-eyed sparkle and longing.

Should Geralt choose Triss as his lover, then she also makes plans with Geralt included. Only, Triss is more optimistic and emotionally expressive with it.

5 Dandelion

  • First: Geralt! Must you ruin everything? I had him just where I wanted him…
  • Last: Take care of yourself, friend. And you’re not sore about my teasing are you?

A witcher game can’t be complete without a bumbling Dandelion. Sure enough, he found himself knee-deep in a dung heap’s worth of trouble. Geralt came to the rescue but Dandelion had to play it cool because gratitude is for pansies.

Later on, when Dandelion found out that Geralt tried to have both Triss and Yennefer, he made sure to laugh at his friend’s karma. Though it seems Dandelion thought his actions were too harsh at that time, which is unbecoming of him.

4 Vesemir

  • First: Dammit, had her taking notes of ghouls and alghouls, wanted to rest my eyes a bit.
  • Last: You always were an unruly child. I adore that about you. Now fly.

Much like Geralt, Vesemir’s first line of dialogue is in his dream sequence and it paints just how old and gradually burnt out the old witcher is in his tenure. He was probably starting to become senile at that point or in Geralt’s subconscious perception (thanks, Freud!).

The game did enact upon the notion that Vesemir’s time in the saga was just about done. Out of all the deaths in the game, his was the most heroic, sacrificing his life just to give Ciri a chance to flee or survive.

3 Eredin

  • First: She’ll not abandon you. You humans are so impractical.
  • Last: He set us against each other… and he’s made off with Cirilla.

As an initially generic-looking masked villain, Eredin communicated with raspy grunts no more verbose than a bubbling clogged sewer pipe. When he did finally speak, turns out he’s a racist, of course.

Eredin’s final words, however, were quite deceiving as he thought Avallac’h one-upped him with having Ciri. Thankfully, he was wrong and probably just wanted to cause as much harm as he can to Geralt’s circle before drawing his last breath.

2 Avallac’h

  • First: Don’t stare. Help me. Help us both.
  • Last: I am not your foe. I am merely helping Cirilla.

Speaking of Avallac’h, he’s not one to mince words. His first formal appearance in the game (Uma notwithstanding) is him hauling an incapacitated Ciri in a Skellige beach. Only Aen Elle elves could have asked for help after commanding a bystander.

Avallac’h’s last line could have also been his last words had Ciri not interfered. Geralt was poised to strike down Avallac’h as it seems Eredin’s words took effect. Avallac’h couldn’t have been more candid or collected in the face of certain death.

1 Keira Metz

  • First: Do I look like a dairy maid to you?
  • Last: We’re even now.

Keira’s first utter dialogue lines aptly explained her disposition. What we have here is a sorceress who was forced to live like a beggar away from her courtroom comforts but somehow still feels entitled enough to talk down to peasants.

Thankfully, Geralt helped him (if you chose that peaceful resolution) and gave him a castle to attend to, although that castle is Kaer Morhen. Good thing Keira knew how to honor her debts and helped greatly in the battle of Kaer Morhen. That’s certainly a preferable struggle compared to getting skewered in Novigrad.
