The Witcher 3 primarily focuses on Geralt of Rivia, who is, as the title of the game suggests, a witcher. However, Geralt isn’t the only significant hero in the game. He might be the protagonist, but The Witcher 3 wouldn’t be as popular as it is without many intriguing characters, heroes, and villains alike. From all the fantasy species included in the game, sorceresses are one of the most important ones. Not only does Geralt get to choose between two beautiful sorceresses, but they also play a highly important part in the fight against the Wild Hunt.
However, not every sorceress in the game is as powerful as others. Some get their opportunity to shine while others barely appear in it. It’s time to find out which sorceress of The Witcher 3 is the most powerful one based solely on her actions and powers in the game.
Updated February 5, 2022, by Kat Leroy: Even though The Witcher 3 does its best to give space to all major sorceresses who appear in the book series, some otherwise important characters from the novels still have only a limited amount of time to shine and show what they can do, what are their true powers. As such, these sorceresses rank lower than they might have, had they gotten a larger part in the story. Despite that, most of the sorceresses in The Witcher 3 have at least one strong moment that clearly demonstrates their powers, and some of them are instrumental for saving the other characters, including Geralt himself. Of course, only one can be the strongest.
8 Síle De Tansarville
Síle de Tansarville is a powerful sorceress, but when the players of The Witcher 3 meet her, it’s clear that all of her strength is gone. Síle suffers and withers in the prison where the witch hunters locked her, her health ruined.
When Geralt and Yennefer come to save her and Margarita, Síle acknowledges she won’t make it and asks Geralt to grant her a merciful and quick death. As such, she doesn’t get to show off her magical powers at all, which makes her the weakest sorceress in this game.
7 Fringilla Vigo
Fringilla is a powerful sorceress who was able to temporarily blind Yennefer during the battle at Sodden. However, judging by her merits during The Witcher 3, she holds a low position on this list. Fringilla barely does anything in the game, and she lets herself be captured by the emperor Emhyr. And when Geralt and Yennefer secure her freedom, she seems more bitter about it than grateful. She helps Geralt and Ciri fight the Wild Hunt, but the players never see her actions during the battle, so it’s unclear how important Fringilla’s presence was for the battle’s final outcome.
Fringilla has a much more active role in the Netflix show, where she fights for Nilfgaard and tries to ensure the alliance with Francesca Findabair in the second season. Even though not all of Fringilla’s plans work out the way she imagines, she still is a force to be reckoned with, as she proves by using her magic on her enemies and killing them while they’re unable to move.
6 Margarita Laux-Antille
Margarita Laux-Antille is no sludge, but she doesn’t get to show her magic talent very much. However, if the player takes the time and lets Geralt speak with Margarita, she’ll reveal she would have been able to escape the witch hunters who captured her if only she hadn’t been traveling alongside her pupils. Margarita’s sacrifice ends up in vain, though, since the King Radovid has all her pupils executed.
At least Margarita gets the chance to prove her powers by joining the final fight against the Wild Hunt. So even though Radovid’s men might have tortured her, by surviving, Margarita proved that she’s stronger than other sorceresses.
5 Keira Metz
Keira Metz is a capable sorceress, but she prefers not to engage in combat too much. As long as she can avoid it, that’s fine by her. Keira prefers a comfortable life in luxury and is a sensual person.
Yet, she still manages to save Lambert’s life during the battle at Kaer Morhen, and the way she deals with the Wild Hunt riders is rather impressive. She simply removes them by making them fly and then smashing them against the ground. She’s also smart enough to be able to come up with a cure to the plague. If Keira and Lambert both survive the game, they become a couple, so they seem to get the happy ending they deserve.
4 Philippa Eilhart
To be fair to Philippa Eilhart, she’s more powerful than Triss and possibly even more than Yennefer. That said, she has limited space in the game and as such, she gets to show only a small portion of her actual powers. Philippa seems fearless, is good at plotting. And she’s brave at facing her enemies, which she proves when she kills Radovid, the man who had her eyes gouged out. It’s difficult to overlook that she likes others to do her dirty work for her, though, and that’s why she doesn’t rank higher on this list.
Still, it’s impressive to see Philippa accompany Geralt in the search of the Sunstone and use her powers against the enemies lurking in the dark. It’s more than probable that without Philippa by his side, Geralt never would have discovered the Sunstone in the first place. That makes Philippa even more important than she might originally seem.
3 Triss Merigold
Triss is one of the youngest members of the Lodge of Sorceresses, but that doesn’t mean she’s not powerful. Not only is she an experienced herbalist, but she also uses her considerable magic skills to help Geralt and the others during the battle at Kaer Morhen.
For example, she saves Ciri from getting injured by a Wild Hunt rider. What’s more, Triss repeatedly uses her powers and resources to help the persecuted mages, and she’s helping them get to safety. Triss gets more space to shine and show off her magical talent in the game. Her most impressive moment is when she rains fire on the Wild Hunt riders which helps Geralt and the other witchers to get back to the witchers’ keep safe during the battle.
2 Yennefer Of Vengerberg
If it wasn’t for Yennefer, Geralt and Ciri wouldn’t make it as far as they did. It’s Yennefer who relentlessly searches for Ciri, and isn’t afraid to do some pretty unsavory things to find out what happened to her adoptive daughter. For example, she uses the power of necromancy, which is no easy task.
Yennefer is also the one who keeps the magical shield over Kaer Morhen during the battle and even though she’s not able to hold it the entire time, she still assures there are no other deaths besides one during the battle. She also shields Geralt from the White Frost after the final battle which allows Geralt to reach the tower in time and see Ciri before she goes off to fight (and hopefully defeat) the White Frost.
1 Ciri
Granted, Ciri isn’t a typical sorceress. For one, she can have children and isn’t as long-lived as Yennefer and the rest, but her magic powers still earn her a spot on this list. Everyone knows that Ciri is excellent with a sword and can take down enemies who are much bigger and stronger than her.
However, she’s also a child of the elder blood and a lady of space and time. Ciri can create portals to other worlds and easily travel through them. Ciri proves beyond doubt that she’s special and very powerful when she defeats the White Frost in the game’s finale (but only if Geralt was supportive enough of her beforehand). Even though it isn’t clear how exactly Ciri defeated the White Frost, she saved an entire world, and maybe even more worlds, by doing so, which ultimately makes her the most powerful sorceress in The Witcher 3.
