Geralt isn’t ever really told to stop slaying monsters in The Witcher 3. Rather, he slowly stops gaining experience as he begins to out-level the monsters and the quests, all while the experience needed to reach the next level grows ever higher.

With that in mind, here are the max levels Geralt can reach throughout various stages of The Witcher 3 and the quickest ways to achieve them.

The Level Caps For Geralt In The Witcher 3

While it is true that there is no hard level cap in The Witcher 3, Geralt will only be able to attain a general level range by the end of each phase of the game.

If you stick to the original version of The Witcher 3, then Geralt will only reach about level 70 before the main credits roll.

In all likelihood, however, you were probably drawn into the full experience just as countless players before you and went all-in on the game’s Blood and Wine expansion. In that case, Geralt will be able to slowly build his experience up to around level 100 in Toussaint.

Of course, once Geralt has taken on every last side quest, slain every troublesome monster, and liberated every person, non-human, and princess goat across the Continent, there’s the option to do it all again in New Game Plus. Geralt will restart his adventure at whatever level he ended the first, allowing him to reach higher levels the next time around.

The Experience Curve For Geralt

Geralt will gain experience from quests and kills and these work in slightly different ways.

Questing Experience

Geralt will gain less experience from quests the more significantly he out-levels them. Six levels or more above and Geralt’s experience gain drops to a fraction from that of recommended quest levels. Likewise, the witcher can gain more experience from quests that out-level him.

Now, eventually, Geralt will have accomplished every quest across the Continent, at which point any leveling will become an excruciatingly slow grind. That’s because even the experience from monster kills decreases to virtually nothing as Geralt nears level 100.

Kill Experience

To boost your experience gain every bit you can, make sure to equip Roach with a Monster Trophy that’ll do just that each time Geralt makes a kill. This ensures Geralt collects every scrap of experience possible for his efforts.

It is also important to activate enemy upscaling. Naturally, this causes the monsters to scale with Geralt’s level rather than stagnant area leveling. This means if Geralt ventures to a typically low-level area, the beasts will be drastically upscaled and grant a hefty experience bonus if Geralt is able to slay them.

However, as Geralt’s experience gain slows to a near standstill around level 100, so too do the monsters begin to cap out at level 105. This eliminates any chance encounters with red skull-marked enemies and thus any experience bonuses for an over-leveled kill.

Once you hit this wall, the remaining experience Geralt can accrue is inconsequential. This essentially barring the witcher at the soft level cap of level 100 until you choose to restart the game in New Game Plus.
