Reports may indicate that production on The Witcher season 2 might be starting back up again soon, but according to showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, that doesn’t necessarily mean things will be back to normal. The team has spent a great amount of time preparing for what a mid-pandemic set might look like, including a plan to alter the story in order to meet regulations.
In a recent interview with TheWrap, Hissrich confirmed that The Witcher’s story will be impacted by COVID-19 regulations. “It will have to,” she stated. The crew behind the Netflix series is consistently planning on how to handle production once things do resume, while simultaneously waiting to hear from “various governments” to weigh in with regulations.
Hissrich went on to explain that one of the benefits of being both the showrunner and an on-set writer is the fact that she’ll be able to help make those changes as production goes on. In the meantime, she and the rest of the writing team are going back into the scripts and “making some big shifts.”
Although Hissrich didn’t indicate exactly what will be changed, one can imagine that scenes requiring large crowds or a lot of physical contact may have been altered or deleted altogether. The team will likely try to stick to their material as much as possible, but the season 2 that we eventually see will likely be different from one that might have been filmed in a world without COVID-19.
Much of it likely depends on the regulations that take place as well. When filming sex scenes for example, if both actors test negative for the virus and consent to the physicality required to make the scene, things may not be altered at all. According to Hissrich though, the production will adapt to both government regulations as well as what the actors on set are comfortable with.
The Witcher season 2 is still expected to be released in 2021, although it wouldn’t be surprising if a delay were to be announced in the future. Still, the safety of everyone involved should remain a priority, even if we really can’t wait to get our eyes on the hit Netflix series’ second season.
