It has been about a couple of years since it was initially revealed that the story centered around Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher video games and author Andrzej Sapkowski’s books would be receiving a Netflix series. Now, it looks as if the streaming service’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, has finally decided to provide fans of the franchise with a time frame as to when they should expect to be able to watch the adaptation.
According to an announcement Sarandos made during an investor call which covered the projects that would arrive on Netflix later this year, the company’s CCO stated that The Witcher should be appearing on the service sometime in the last three months of 2019. Unfortunately, no specific date was given other than the plan that the fantasy drama based on CD Projekt Red’s games and Sapkowski’s novels is going being released in the “fourth quarter” of the year.
While this news may be disappointing to those fans of The Witcher who had been hoping to watch the Netflix series sooner rather than later, it may not come as much of a surprise to those who have been following the show’s trajectory in production. As it so happens, it appears as if shooting for the show is still occurring in some capacities, as a set photo for The Witcher recently made its way online, implying that the project has yet to reach the post-production phase.
For the uninitiated, Netflix’s The Witcher stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible - Fallout) as Geralt of Rivia, and the series will be working closely with Andrzej Sapkowski as a creative consultant for the show in order to keep it as close to the source material as possible. The Witcher Netflix series is expected to be eight episodes long and will also include other fan favorite characters such as Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), Triss (Anna Shaffer), and more.
All things considered, it will be interesting to see just how well The Witcher plays out in the Netflix show. There’s no doubt that plenty of fans have been eager to witness a live-action version of the fantasy series. Until then, though, Sapkowski’s novels and CD Projekt Red’s games will have to suffice.
Netflix’s The Witcher series is set to debut on the streaming service at some point in late 2019.
