The Witcher Season 2 was supposed to be well into production by now, but unforeseen circumstances ended up delaying production – something about a global pandemic that seems to have flown under everyone’s radar.
In March, every movie studio in the UK ended up closing down because of the outbreak of COVID-19, including Arborfield Studios, the London-based studio responsible for the Netflix Witcher series. The closure came after actor Kristofer Hivju, who was set to play Nivellen in Season 2, tested positive for the virus.
Now, according to a report by Deadline, the UK film studios are starting to open back up again. Although there hasn’t been any confirmation from Netflix that production for The Witcher has started up again, the news means that will finally get its much-anticipated second season.
While the first season of The Witcher wasn’t a huge hit with critics, it was well-received by and fans who sought it out after Game of Thrones’ controversial final season left a vacuum in their viewing habits. The launch of a new adult-themed fantasy series filled the niche nicely, and brought the show enough success for Netflix to justify continuing the series.
The Witcher is the second video-game-based series produced by Netflix, coming after the animated Castlevania series premiered in 2017. Devil May Cry and Resident Evil are both getting Netflix adaptations as well. If all of these series continue to attract fans and new viewers it seems likely that the streaming service will continue to invest in series based on popular game franchises.
We don’t know when season 2 of The Witcher will come out, but its eventual release will be a sign of the world moving back to some semblance of normalcy.
