The Witcher game series has sold over 50 million copies, riding on the immense wave of popularity of both the third installment and the Netflix series that launched late last year. CD Projekt’s latest financial report broke these milestone news, placing it right next to other huge names like Borderlands, Metal Gear, Far Cry, and others.
The team also announced the news on Twitter, thanking their fans for their devotion. As a reply by the official Xbox Twitter account says, “Congratulations! That’s a lot of coins tossed to Witchers.” Indeed, the series saw a resurgence in popularity after The Witcher 3 launched on Switch in 2019, and again in the first quarter of this year, just after the Netflix series premiered.
The financial report also reveals that sales revenue increased by 169.7% in the first quarter of this year compared to same time last year, mostly owing to “continuing strong sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its expansions,” as well as the launch of the Switch edition, and sales surrounding GWENT: The Witcher Card Game and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
The company also admits that its sales were bolstered by the worldwide pandemic, which forced people to stay home. The upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 is also expected to make a large impact on their finances - but by then, we’ll just keep recommending Geralt and his friends to everyone who hasn’t met them yet.
