The Witcher franchise has been a success in its many iterations and the television series has managed to replicate the popularity of the original books and following games. With The Witcher being one of Netflix’s most popular shows of 2019, there has been a lot of excitement for season 2 and how it will build on the first season. The showrunner from the series has now revealed which aspects they are keen to delve into with the new series, and it seems to have a focus on the villains.

The story of The Witcher focuses on Geralt of Rivia as he takes on monsters for coin and on occasion for moral reasons. Despite these frequent self-contained narratives, there are greater stories that arc over the books, games, and show. With an already established world and set of stories, many have been interested to see how the show would build on its cast and narrative to make an even more compelling second series.

The showrunner of The Witcher, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, has revealed that she is looking forward to exploring the characters Cahir and Fringilla further. Both these characters acting as the antagonists of the last episode of season 1 after a series of events building up to the climax. While there were many questions left unanswered about these characters that fans who have not read the books will be keen to see, some viewers would like a different focus from the series. Some of the immediate responses to the tweet suggested that fans wanted a deeper focus on Geralt than these characters, and felt that the central protagonist was at times sidelined for Yennefer.

There are plenty of directions fans would like series 2 to explore. However, it may be necessary to lay down the groundwork for future seasons in series 2 or it may be a new direction completely. Either way exploring the importance of Nilfgaard will still be an interesting avenue to go down and shedding light on Fringilla and her relationship with Geralt would undoubtedly keep fans interested.

At the moment The Witcher season 2 is still scheduled for a 2021 release, with that said delays may occur because of the current coronavirus pandemic. Many fans will be excited to see the new season and the direction it takes, and with the showrunner already reassuring fans that the series will be more linear, it seems that the issues of season 1 have been addressed. All that remains to be seen is if the tried and tested storylines can entertain audiences once again.
