The Witcher franchise is home to many terrifying and monstrous creatures. For fans of the game and/or the Netflix show, there might be one you like most like the tragic Striga or the unnerving Caretaker. But, like every character in the series, each creature and monster have corresponding Dungeons and Dragons alignments.
Gaunter O’Dimm is not on this list because he is OP and there is only one of him as opposed to other creatures on this list. Monsters like Nekkers also didn’t make the cut because they don’t have much intelligence. But fans of the series will recognize creatures from the Netflix series, the video games, and the original books.
10 Lawful Good: Golden Dragon
The Netflix series impressed many fans of The Witcher games and books with its attention to detail. Some even consider episode 6 “Rare Species” to be one of the best episodes of the series. That’s due, in large part, to the Golden Dragon.
Though dragons are capable of great destruction, they mostly keep to themselves and only attack when provoked or threatened. As seen in the show, Borch (the Golden Dragon) enlists the help of Geralt to recover a dragon egg and, depending on your perspective, helps Geralt and Yennefer come to terms with their emotions.
9 Neutral Good: Dryad
Dryads are one type of nymph found in The Witcher universe. Found primarily in Brokilon forest, these typically female warriors defend their forest and recruit others into their ranks, transforming them into Dryads using the Water of Brokilon. Like Ciri, the Dryads fall under the “Neutral Good” alignment.
Though willing to heal wounds and guide people, they don’t typically leave the bounds of their forest. They will defend their home and the trees until their very last breaths if necessary. Their connection to magic helps them in this endeavor, able to call upon the trees themselves for help in dire moments.
8 Chaotic Good: Wight
This may seem like an odd or even improper fit, but if you consider a Wight’s perspective, it makes perfect sense. After all, Wights will not attack unless provoked. That means, if you approach without a weapon drawn or leave them alone, these monsters shouldn’t bother you.
Fans of the games will recognize the Spotted Wight from The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine where you can quite wholesomely swap spoons with him. Defending their territory, mixing stuff in a cauldron, and minding their own business. It’s the simple things in life.
7 Lawful Neutral: Djinn
“The Last Wish”, as a quest from the game and a plot point in the Netflix series, stands out to many fans as one the best stories from the franchise. It involves a creature known as a djinn or genie which, as many people know, has the ability to grant three wishes.
Though quite neutral themselves, djinns are often bound to masters in the form of mages who imprison them. As their subjugates, djinns can be made to do whatever their captor wishes be that murder, romantic errands, and more.
6 True Neutral: Rusalka
Though no monster can be truly neutral, Rusalkas (also known as Naiads) come fairly close since they don’t really leave their main areas, but lure people to them. They normally take the form of an attractive young woman in a pool as seen in the photo from Flickr user tania.ka on the left. They are cousins to Dryads.
They typically try to kidnap young girls to transform them into nymphs. However, some such as the Naiad of the Murky Waters, can perform helpful tasks like acting as a servant to The Lady of the Lake and healing.
5 Chaotic Neutral: Doppler
Dopplers relate to a common creature found in myth: shapeshifters. Given how easily they can change their appearance, their personalities match. They can also absorb another person’s memories as their own, making the transformation even more complete or potentially deadly as we see in the Netflix series.
However, The Witcher fandom page says that Dopplers are usually kind creatures which stands in opposition to the capricious, cruel, and narcissistic. Most other humans do fear Dopplers, so that alienation could contribute to the steeling of their hearts.
4 Lawful Neutral: Striga
The Striga might just be the most notable monster in all of The Witcher lore thanks to the Netflix series. A cursed girl, Strigas have a monstrous appearance and operate on the very base of needs: hunger and survival.
Governed by the curse that makes them beasts, Strigas don’t really have a moral code. As such, they follow one law: the emptiness of their stomach. But the curse can be lifted and the girl given a chance to recover. They can also “relapse” and turn back into Strigas. Excellent.
3 Neutral Evil: Garkain
Higher Vampires feature in the games, but their agendas seem more nuanced than other members of the vampire family.
Garkains are one of the lesser vampires in The Witcher series. They also have quite grotesque forms that they use to intimidate their prey before pinning down their victims to drain them of blood.
But the mere drinking of blood is not enough to make one evil. It is the fact that Garkains seem to derive intense joy from tearing their victims to shreds and mucking about in their viscera.
2 Chaotic Evil: Royal Wyvern
Regular wyverns exist in the world of The Witcher, but Royal Wyverns amp all of their traits up to eleven. With more intelligence, potent venom, and a high dose of aggression, Royal Wyverns feature in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The females of the species are said to be aggressive to their own kind and see almost everything as food. Royal Wyverns will attack throngs of commoners, soldiers, and Witcher alike with the same level of angry-wasp-in-summer. But they could just as easily not do that, too.
They only reliable behavior from Royal Wyverns is to defend their nests if provoked.
1 Play D&D Witcher Style
With many fans spending more time at home these days, some have been replaying the games, rewatching the show, or even re-reading the original books. But others have opted to create The Witcher themed Dungeons and Dragons campaigns.
Get a group together and go adventuring as your favorite mutants, mages, and sassy bard. Fans of the series can also pick up other games like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey or Red Dead Redemption 2 to scratch their RPG itches.
