The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (and the franchise as a whole) has a lot of magic users in it. There are people who channel Chaos to do a myriad of both wonderful and horrible things, and one of the most interesting groups of mages in the franchise is the Lodge of Sorceresses.
Every Sorceress in this group in wildly different in their looks, personality, and preferred magic, so it seemed like a perfect bunch of people to compare to the Chinese Zodiacs.
12 The Ox: Cirila “Ciri” Riannon
Let’s start with the most well-known Sorceresses, then gradually get more obscure as it goes on. And, no character, other than maybe Geralt, is more well known that Cirilla of Cintra. Ciri is an Ox through and through, she might be rebellious like a tiger, but every single other trait of her is closer to the Ox or Horse. Ciri is highly independent (almost to a fault), she’s stubborn, a tad shameless, and she’s slow to get angry but once she does everyone in a mile radius better watch out.
11 The Tiger: Yennefer Of Vengerberg
Talking about The Tiger, here is the true encapsulation of that Zodiac, Yennefer of Vengerberg. Tiger’s are wild-cards, rebelling against the norm, seeking only what they desire whether it be pleasure or family, and they’re incredibly powerful. Yennefer is a rebel to her core, rebelling against the Aretuza norms in the Netflix series, rebelling against Nilfgaard at the Battle of Sodden Hill, and even rebelling against fate itself by trying to fix her magically-mutilated womb. Yennefer is imposing, powerful, beautiful, dangerous, and also a bit nonsensical.
10 The Sheep: Triss Merigold
Now, calling Yennefer a Tiger and Triss a Sheep might sound like bias or favoritism, but it really isn’t. These are just the Zodiacs that best represent these unique women. Triss Merigold is one of the kindest and most altruistic people within The Witcher series, book, or game iteration, and that doesn’t change even in the games where her biggest crime is manipulating the man she loves. The Sheep is a bit naive and needs someone a bit more realistic to save them from themselves, which is similar to Triss and Geralt’s dynamic. The Sheep is known to have a deep and powerful well of strength hidden deep within, and Merigold the Fearless shares that trait.
9 The Rooster: Keira Metz
Keira Metz is likely the next most well-known Sorceress due to her fun or incredibly sad involvement in the third Witcher game, depending on Geralt’s choice. Keira Metz is pretty posh, needing the finer things in life which is why she’s so miserable in Velen. But, Keira is also incredibly competent and driven, another trait of The Rooster, and she’ll stop at nothing to get what she wants, even if it means selling the formulae for a plague to a Mad King.
But, underneath what seems like selfishness, the Rooster has a deep well in their heart for the plight of others, they help out whoever they can, they just do it flamboyantly.
8 The Dragon: Philippa Eilhart
Next, we have the leader and likely most powerful member of the Lodge herself, Philippa Eilhart. Philippa is, of course, a natural-born leader and seemingly just one step above every other Sorceress out there, or at least it seems that way. This is why she so naturally resonates with the Dragon Zodiac. The Dragon stops at nothing to achieve their goal in life and believes that whatever they need to do for that goal is justified or necessary. This is also why some people view Philippa as a neutral party, some see her as a villain, and some see her as someone working for good.
7 The Rat: Sheala de Tancarville
Sheala De Tancarville might not be someone recognizable for people who only played the third Witcher game, but for those who started with the first or second, it’s a different story. Sheala dresses in a very strict style and follows very specific rules, as well as being known to be the conniving sort. In any case, at her core Sheala works behind the scenes, schemes around, and desperately works to increase her standing and prestige. She’s not an innately horrible person by any means, but she has absolutely committed some atrocities.
6 The Snake: Fringilla Vigo
Now it’s starting to get a bit more obtuse in terms of Sorceresses that a lot of the fanbase would know. Fringilla is one of the rare Sorceresses that works for Nilfgaard, and she actually fought against Yennefer in the Battle of Sodden Hill. Ms. Vigo is constantly worried that her connection to the Lodge will lead to her death at the hands of Emhyr, and it’s this paranoia that leaves her ready to “shed her skin” and run as soon as things get even a bit bad. Fringilla is a deep and complex character who has a subtle obsession with Geralt after their involvement together.
5 The Dog: Sabrina Glevissig
Sabrina Glevissig is quite the character. She’s a rival to Yennefer, as both of these intimidating Sorceresses trained at Aretuza at the same time. She’s also one of the most powerful Sorceresses of the Northern Kingdoms. She’s known for being absurdly loyal, quick to judge, and very quick-witted. Her loyalty is actually what makes her the perfect candidate for the Dog Zodiac, while her need for love/compassion by dressing in provocative outfits just also happens to match this Zodiac as well. Sabrina sadly enough was betrayed by the very King that she trusted, and was burned alive at the stake, the biggest fear for any and all mages.
4 The Pig: Margarita Laux-Antille
One of the original members of the Lodge, Margarita or “Rita” is a scholar and an intellectual who harbors deep compassion for the pursuit of knowledge and all those who chase after it. She was the head of the famous school Aretuza itself and oddly enough, held no desire for politics. To compare her to a Pig when her figure is described as “carved by the Gods” in the books seems unfair, but Rita truly had a gluttonous desire for knowledge.
3 The Rabbit: Assire var Anahid
Assire Var Anahid is quite the unique Sorceresses in comparison to all the rest, as she always seemed to bounce around many different places with many different aspirations or plans. She was also, like Fringilla, a rare Nilfgaardian Sorceress, though she was of Nordling blood. Assire was most well known for her lack of a “glamour” that all the other Sorceresses used, and only accented her appearance with just the right touch of makeup.
Ms. Anahid was wary of many people, and while she served Nilfgaard well, she never truly trusted Emhyr, this is likely what led to her death in the second game, and it was surprising that her fight or flight response didn’t trigger during the whole Triss Merigold artifact decompression scene.
2 The Monkey: Lytta “Coral” Neyd
Moving onto Lytta Neyd, a rare Skellige Sorceress. Lytta was a very intelligent and clever Sorceress and one who once jailed Geralt just to anonymously release him so that he would seek her out. This lady might’ve seemed serious at first, she wasn’t above telling jokes or playing horrible “pranks” on people. For example, there was the time she spun her assistant’s hand around 180 degrees with magic just because Geralt was checking her out. Lytta was a complex character and it’s unfortunate she fell at Sodden Hill, but she absolutely is the Sorceress who matches the Monkey Zodiac best.
1 The Horse: Francesca Findabair
And finally, we have one of the least seen but most often talked about Sorceresses in the series, Francesa Findabair. Now, the Horse Zodiac is many things, but one thing it is obsessed with is the pursuit of freedom, Horses love to live free and so did Francesa Findabair. In fact, she also pursued the freedom of her fellow elves, she fought for this so strongly in fact that she even made a deal with Emhyr the Emperor of Nilfgaard to betray the North so that she could become the Queen of Dol Blathanna and keep her people free.
