Witchers, despite being the main attraction of The Witcher saga, are not the most powerful beings in their own world. Even their female counterparts, infertile sorceresses, are on a slightly higher tier above them. For that matter, around half of all of Geralt’s allies and enemies are more powerful than him.
Yennefer comes to mind as one of Geralt’s most powerful allies both politically, intellectually, and physically. Meanwhile, Gaunter O’Dimm takes the cake when it comes to Geralt’s most outrageously overpowered enemy. If he wanted, he can take over anything. Thankfully, Yennefer can stop Gaunter, or can she? Let’s see who will win.
10 YENNEFER WINS: HAS FREQUENTLY FOUGHT STRONGER ENEMIES
Regardless of how powerful Yennefer is, she and her allies have often taken on the underdog role, the “David” fighting the “Goliath.” This has been the case from Vilgefortz in the books to the Wild Hunt in the games.
Yennefer is pretty much a veteran of fighting and surviving entities or enemies significantly stronger than her. She’ll likely be stressed out facing Gaunter but it’s nothing she hasn’t overcome before.
9 GAUNTER O’DIMM WINS: CAN’T BE KILLED
The Hearts of Stone DLC never really went into length or detail as to what kind of creature Gaunter O’Dimm really is. From what little the players know of him, however, it seems he’s immortal and there’s no physical way to kill him.
Some players will often doubt that his human form in Hearts of Stone isn’t exactly his true form but more like a human interpretation of him or a disguise. One simply can’t win against someone who just won’t stop trying to win again and again.
8 YENNEFER WINS: LOTS OF FRIENDS WHO CAN HELP
When facing enemies stronger than her, Yennefer is surprisingly not shy about asking– sorry, demanding for help. She does have friends in high places including kings, emperors, queens, witchers, and even a vampire.
Of all of these friends, one of the dearest and most powerful would be Ciri. She can literally control time and space, far exceeding what Yennefer can do with physics and reality. Gaunter doesn’t exactly seem the type to have friends to help him.
7 GAUNTER O’DIMM WINS: IS ABLE TO OUTSMART GERALT
Much like Yennefer, Geralt is also no stranger to tussling with beings bigger and more powerful than him. He’s that one witcher who can outskill or defeat an accomplished sorceress or wizard, much like how he was the best contributor to Vilgefortz’s defeat.
That’s why Gaunter outsmarting Geralt and pretty much binding him is worrying for Yennefer. If Gaunter can do that to the franchise’s poster boy, then toying with Yennefer before defeating her shouldn’t be too hard.
6 YENNEFER WINS: A CENTURY OF WISDOM
With that said, it’s not really that difficult to outsmart or outwit Geralt. Many people have done so, including Yennefer. Yennefer is one of the oldest sorceresses in the Lodge and can easily challenge Philippa Eilhart for the top spot.
She has accumulated decades of knowledge and bitter experience to know full well how to gain the upper hand in anything, be it a romantic relationship or political deal. A battle of contract loopholes with Gaunter ought to look interesting and more favorable for her compared to how Geralt handled it.
5 GAUNTER O’DIMM WINS: PLAYS WITH TIME AND SPACE
Turns out Ciri isn’t the only being in The Witcher 3 that can play time and space like a fiddle. Gaunter O’Dimm does it regularly and even casually whenever he fancies. For all anyone can know, he could well be more powerful than Ciri.
His grasp on his powers is certainly more elegant. The fact that he can selectively stop time dead on its tracks without straining very well means Yennefer could be no match for him. No amount of sorceress magic can match that.
4 YENNEFER WINS: GERALT ALREADY DEFEATED GAUNTER ONCE
Oddly enough, it only takes a mere witcher to defeat someone who is quite possibly more powerful than Ciri. Turns out one of Gaunter’s quirks– his fixation on making some exciting covenants with mortals, is also one of his biggest weaknesses.
Geralt easily took advantage of Gaunter’s compulsion. He was able to beat Gaunter at one of his relatively safer games. All Geralt has to do is tell Yennefer the hows and ifs and she’ll likely be able to replicate the same results flawlessly.
3 GAUNTER O’DIMM WINS: IT’S ALL A GAME TO HIM
On the other hand, making nefarious deals with humans only seems to be a pastime for Gaunter O’Dimm. In fact, he never outright or directly fought Geralt or even took any mortal seriously like they’re threats.
One could easily argue that if Gaunter was serious or was threatened, he might be able to unleash all manners of unfathomable hell against anyone. All he has to do to defeat an annoyance like Yennefer is stop time and shove a spoon into her eyes.
2 YENNEFER WINS: YENNEFER IS EXTREMELY CLEVER AND RESOURCEFUL
If there was one thing where Yennefer excels better than Geralt, it would be wits. She is older than him, after all, and is more intelligent. Yennefer will go great lengths– even resort to morally dubious methods to achieve her goals.
If that goal is defeating Gaunter, or maybe even “killing” him, then she’ll find a way. She’s functionally immortal too anyway and has easy access to darker magic like necromancy to even out the playing field. If not, then she can easily use her guile to make a bulletproof contract with Gaunter.
1 GAUNTER O’DIMM WINS: HE’S THE CLOSEST THING TO A DEITY IN THE WITCHER
Before Gaunter O’Dimm came along, Ciri was pretty much the unchallenged semi-god of The Witcher 3. He has displayed powers beyond Ciri’s capability such as granting wishes, making someone immortal, or pretty much manipulating anything to his whim.
He might as well be a deity in The Witcher universe given how he’s unchallenged. If what he says is true and he really can’t be killed, then there’s no winning against a being like him, no matter how well Yennefer tries.
