The merchandising machine for Final Fantasy VII Remake keeps chugging along, as there is now a gorgeous Sony Walkman based on the game, which is available in Japan.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was one of the most highly-anticipated games of all time upon release and it was expected to be one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) games of 2020. Square Enix has been releasing merchandise for the game since before it was released, ranging from figures based on the cast to replica clothing and jewelry worn by the characters in the game.
The Japanese Final Fantasy fans get all of the best merch and the latest item is no exception. There is a Sony Walkman bearing the logo of the game that is currently being sold on the CDJapan website, or rather, it would be, as the item has already sold out. It bears mentioning that “Walkman” is a brand name and this item is actually an MP3 player. It doesn’t play cassette tapes or music CDs.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake Sony Walkman was selling for 40150 yen, which is around $375. The high price point did little to detract from interest in the item, as it has already sold out, with no word on a second run or international release. If the item does have another run, then it will be possible to order it from CDJapan, as the company does international shipping.
Final Fantasy VII Remake has been closely associated with Sony and the PlayStation brand since the start. The original Final Fantasy VII was one of the killer apps on the original PlayStation, and Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced during Sony’s conference at E3 2015. Final Fantasy VII Remake is a timed exclusive on PlayStation 4 until next April, making it one of several amazing exclusives during the system’s final year, alongside Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. It’s not surprising to see further co-branding between Final Fantasy VII Remake and Sony products, and it seems that fans are willing to drop thousands of yen/hundreds of dollars to own a small piece of the game.
