Onyx Path Publishing recently announced that their latest RPG product They Came from Beneath the Sea! is now available in PDF and print-on-demand form at DriveThruRPG. The accompanying supplement They Came from Beneath the Sea! Quips and Cinematics Cards is also available in PDF and print-on-demand versions.
They Came from Beneath the Sea! uses Onyx Path’s Storypath System to depict the cinematic genre of the 1950s and 1960s science fiction. The source book encompasses the terror, thrills, and humorous tone of the classic B-movies that featured humanity under attack by countless giant insects, monstrous abominations, and otherworldly aliens.
In this RPG, you adopt one of five model B-movie character archetypes - the Everyman, the G-Man, the Mouth, the Scientist, and the Survivor - to battle against (you guessed it) alien horrors from the sea. For the Director, the source book comes with a variety of cinematic encounters to drop your players into, ranging in difficulty from easy (defending a coastal town from a direct attack) to the rather perilous, such as the campaign finale of a life-or-death encounter with leviathans at the bottom of the sea.
Mixed in with the sci-fi and horror noir are game mechanics to feature the genre’s campy and comical aspects. Rules are included for the Director and players to embrace a healthy dose of parody, but they also leave plenty of room for you to create and set your own level of humor.
The supplemental They Came from Beneath the Sea! Quips and Cinematics Cards is designed to bring in and help inspire the whimsy for the RPG. The deck includes 120 cards that present genre-specific puns and witty dialogue for both the Director and players to spout at opportune cinematic moments during gameplay. The deck also provides metagame abilities for the Director to employ to keep the action rolling and engaging.
