That’s right. According to new data, the all-conquering Fortnite is only the third-biggest title in terms of worldwide prize money from tournaments!

It’s taken quite some time for esports to be recognized as a global force to be reckoned with. The concept continues to grow, with mega-hits like Overwatch, League of Legends and Rocket League leading the charge. As tournaments gathered steam, their scale increased, more viewers were attracted, and prize pots grew exponentially.

Which title do you think would have the most generous prize pot? GoldenCasinoNews has some fascinating new data on the matter, and it may not be the game you’d think.

On the subject of the much-beloved battle royale Fortnite, GoldenCasinoNews reports that last year’s Fortnite World Cup Finals gave out total prizes of $30.3 million. This was between both Solo and Duo but is still a phenomenal sum. Overall, though, these numbers represent the 6th and 7th spot for biggest esports tournaments.

In total, meanwhile, Fortnite has accrued a total of $90 million in prize money in a three-year period. Incredibly, this is worthy of only a third-place position overall.

Which game has proven most lucrative? The winner is classic MOBA Dota 2, which has accrued a dizzying $224.8 million. All that money’s been hard-fought, too: the report explains that almost 1,400 tournaments have been held to date!

As for the largest events themselves, The International has taken the top spot each year, surpassing its own record several times along the way. Of the top 10 biggest prize pools in eSports, The International 2014 took the eighth spot ($10.9 million), The International 2016 took the fifth ($18.4 million), then each annual event topped the next, culminating in The International 2019 being the highest-ranking event to date: the glitzy Shanghai tournament, held last August, topped a cool $34.4 million in total payouts!

There we are, then. Fortnite has the same tremendous mass appeal it always did, and also continues to gather huge crowds of fans and competitors at the highest levels of play. As an esport, though, it isn’t quite on top of the world. For the moment, that title belongs to Dota 2.
