As Season 2 rolls on, Epic continues to transform Fortnite and defy those who claim the battle royale game is over the hill.
Fortnite was riding on its biggest high ever coming into this week. Twenty-seven million players watched Travis Scott perform in-game last weekend, with the first of those concerts having more than 12 million attendees. Epic needs to fill the time between now and the end of the season – and they already have begun.
Something called Party Royale was added to Fortnite this week, and it might be the biggest indicator of how Epic sees the game so far – not just as a battle royale title, but effectively as a social media platform. There are no guns in Party Royale; players can’t even build. They can just hang out with friends at the movies, a soccer field, the race track, and other fun places.
Elsewhere, this week’s 12.50 update provided bad news for players who rely on the Heavy Sniper Rifle. The weapon is so powerful that players had been using it to destroy builds from a distance. That is no longer possible. The weapon will also no longer be able to wipe out a player with full health and full shield in one, well-placed shot. All things considered, the change seems reasonable enough to us.
