It’s getting hotter and hotter outside, which makes it the perfect time to stay indoors and play video games in an air-conditioned environment. This is an especially good week for gamers who enjoy pure weirdness as there’s a bumper crop of odd titles to choose from.
Here are the most exciting new releases that are worth checking out this week (July 5 - July 11).
Catherine: Full Body (July 7 - Switch)
If by some chance you haven’t played either the original version of Catherine or the Full Body edition, then perhaps it’s time to finally check out this bizarre little puzzler on the Switch. Nintendo’s console seems like a perfect fit for this game about infidelity, adulthood, and solving block puzzles in order to avoid being eaten by a giant butt monster.
Seriously, there’s a giant butt monster. You should play this.
Superliminal (July 7 - PS4, Xbox One, Switch)
This seems like a good week for mind-bending puzzle games. Superliminal is all about altering your perception and perspective of objects in order to manipulate reality to progress. It looks incredibly cool and trippy, and our own Sam Watanuki seemed to enjoy it when he played it on PC. As long as the console port is solid this should be a fun addition to your console library.
F1 2020 (July 10 - Ps4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia)
If you like driving fast cars then this game is probably already on your radar. This installment of the racing series lets players get even more involved with the behind-the-scenes operations of being a formula one racecar driver. In his review, Josh Coulson called it “a terrific offering overall from Codemasters for hardened and casual players”, so this should be a must-buy for fans of watching cars go vroom.
Bloodstained: Curse Of The Moon 2 (July 10 -PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)
If Konami isn’t going to give us any new Castlevania games then Koji Igarashi and Inti Creates will just make some themselves. Thus far the Bloodstained series is 2 for 2 for great Castlevania-like titles, so the announcement and shockingly sudden release of Bloodstained: Curse Of The Moon 2 is quite welcome during this usually quiet period for video games.
Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise (July 10 -Switch)
Arguably the biggest game release of this week, this is the highly anticipated sequel to the utterly insane cult classic Deadly Premonition. Fans have been dying for Francis York Morgan - or is it Francis Zach Morgan now? - to make his return and solve another Twin Peaks-inspired mystery while receiving clues in his coffee and remembering to shave. It was definitely a surprise to learn that Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise was not only happening but would be a Nintendo exclusive. Can it possibly be as good or weird as the original? We won’t know for sure until we get our hands on it.
However, in this one Francis can ride a skateboard. So we’re already sold on the game no matter what happens.
