The developer of Path of Exile is gearing up for the Harvest league coming out next week.

Harvest is looking to shake up the RPG in a unique way by introducing a farming and crafting system that enables players to obtain resources. According to Grinding Gears, players will be able to start their own farm called the Sacred Grove. Here players can grow a variety of monsters that can be destroyed and turned into Lifeforce.

Lifeforce will act as a crafting resource that will enable the player to construct different things. For instance, if the player has sufficient Lifeforce they might be able to sacrifice a map in order to obtain three mission from Alva, convert a stack of Oil into a different type of Oil, and so on. As a result, players are incentivized to continually plant and harvest monsters to obtain enough Lifeforce to do this kind of crafting.

This introduces a lot of potential for players in any stage of the game. New players may be able to access better resources to level up faster, mid-game players could access more rewarding quests with less grind, and end game players could amass valuable currency to upgrade their gear.

Of course, it remains to be seen how convenient this will be. Some fans have expressed concerns that this farming mechanic will, pun intended, lead to a lot of farming. It’s unclear how much Lifeforce is needed for crafting and how much Lifeforce is obtained from creatures. It’s not even apparent what the time requirements are and if it’ll be hands on or something that happens passively in the background.

It’s definitely a league that looks to change a lot for players, but it remains to be seen if this will be an addictive mechanic that leads to fun gameplay, or if it’ll be a chore.
