The previously digital exclusive game Those Who Remain is getting a retail physical deluxe edition in Europe and North America for the PlayStation 4 and PC. The first person horror title, developed by Camel 101, originally released on digital storefronts on May 28th, 2020. Wired Productions has been responsible for publishing multiple digital and physical titles such as Deliver Us The Moon, Close To The Sun, and The Town of Light.
Publisher Wired Productions and developer Camel 101 announced the deluxe edition earlier this week as a retail exclusive. Costing $19.99, the game is available for order on their website, www.ThoseWhoRemain.com. The Nintendo Switch version of the game is still only set for summer 2020, with no precise date given.
The deluxe edition of the game is already available in Europe, with the North American release date set for July 17th. The physical-only exclusives packed in with this edition include a digital download code for a prequel comic titled Those Who Remain: Lights Out, and a set of collectible postcards decorated with artwork from key moments in the game.
A first-person psychological horror game, Those Who Remain is set in the town of Dormont. The player must navigate this environment where reality is shaky and darkness has seeped into the minds of its inhabitants. With puzzles and unique and uncanny creatures to content with, this title calls back to its horror inspirations such as Twin Peaks and Silent Hill.
Those Who Remain didn’t make a huge splash in the horror genre when it was initially released, so there wasn’t a particularly large outcry for a deluxe physical edition. The inclusion of a digital comic and postcards may not be enough incentive for anyone new to the game to buy in, or for fans who already purchased the game digitally to double-dip on a second copy.
Camel 101 is an independent developer that self-funded all their titles, but this is the first to get a physical release. Through services provided by publishers like Wired Productions and Limited Run Games, more and more independent titles are seeing physical releases. Considering the trend towards an all digital future only looking stronger as next-gen systems approach, we may be seeing less and less of these types of deluxe editions released.
