In order to break up the long wait ahead of Cyberpunk 2077 followers, CD Projekt Red has released the iOS port of the game Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. The app is ready and available to download for Apple users only.
The complete release of Thronebreaker will bring the epic adventure to iOS in a touchscreen friendly format. The gameplay can be saved in the cloud so that previous PC play can be carried over to the app and vice versa. Indulging in Thronebreaker from your phone carries several bonuses to unlock in GWENT: The Witcher Card Game, including exclusive ornaments and 20 cards that can be used in multiplayer battles. Players will also be able to obtain a set of digital Thronebreaker collectibles for free, including the official soundtrack, concept art, and a map of Lyria.
Thronebreaker revolves around the world of The Witcher designed as a single player RPG. The game operates with a turn-based combat formula and includes story-driven puzzles along the way. Players will be in control of Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia who must enter into war to negate an imminent Nilfgaardian invasion. Meve is tasked with assembling an army strong enough to withstand the attack that involves venturing down a path of chaos and vengeance.
The Witcher spin-off game was first released in October 2018 for PC and eventually came to PS4 and Xbox One by the holiday season. The PC version features a 30-hour long campaign consisting of five regions to explore and an expanse of choices that will inevitably impact the narrative or change the gameplay. Meve’s army is represented by a customizable deck of cards where combat is similar to that featured in GWENT. The object of the game is to preserve a healthy alliance as hero cards will only remain in play as long as Meve retains her allies.
While the game did not meet the expectations of CD Projekt Red, it did muster a small flurry of gamers and went on to receive accolades from the Global Game Awards and the SA Gamer Awards for Best Story and Best Puzzle. The game has been praised for its ability to tell an effective side story to The Witcher series within the restrictions of a card game, however the gameplay has also been called easy and boring by some users.
iOS may be a better platform for Thronebreaker, and an Android version is planned to be released this year.
