Throughout many industries, the concept of things being “overrated” and “underrated” has always existed. Whether it’s actors or directors in movies, authors in literature, or games and developers, it’s natural to see entertainment entities get swept under the rug even though the content is of high quality. This is a perfect description of Titanfall 2.
Respawn, the developer behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, created arguably the greatest campaign in FPS history. The story follows Jack Cooper, an ambitious trainee looking to prove his mark and help the Militia in its war against the IMC and the various mercenaries hired by them.
Titanfall 2’s campaign splits between controlling Cooper directly like any normal FPS and controlling Cooper’s giant robot companion, BT-7274. Titanfall 2 shines with a wide variety of Titan abilities for any situation, as well as an ample gun selection. Surprisingly, most of the weapons are viable options, but as always, certain weapons in Titanfall 2 separate themselves as the cream of the crop.
15 L-STAR
The main weapon for the IMC robotic fighters, the L-STAR operates as an energy light machine gun. The L-STAR packs quite a punch and there’s never a fear of running low on ammo with so many robot enemies to take down.
Unlike the majority of other weapons, the L-STAR doesn’t need to be reloaded but can overheat. It might seem like a godsend to not have to reload, but it’s easy to lose focus on the gun overheating, especially with its high fire rate.
14 G2
The G2 is all about accuracy. If your playstyle is trying to summon your inner Rambo and spray-fire enemies, the G2 is definitely not that. To maximize the effectiveness of the G2, players must be patient and be able to hit enemies with precision.
Although the fire rate is slow being a single shot, the damage of each shot is amplified. If Pilot Cooper stumbles upon a G2 out in the wild, be sure to click those heads.
13 Kraber
Similar to the G2, the Kraber is a single-shot sniper that delivers colossal damage. Unfortunately, Titanfall 2’s campaign doesn’t give players enough of an incentive to use snipers of any kind, let alone the Kraber. Most of the time, Cooper is either running frantically with bullets flying everywhere or he’s blasting IMC agents from inside BT-7274.
However, the Kraber is the far better option when given the choice between the other sniper rifles in the game the Longbow and Double Take. Time spent with the Kraber might be minimal, but the raw power behind it makes every shot feel incredibly momentous and important.
12 R-97
Though certainly not an S-tier weapon in the game, the R-97 is a solid, all-rounder that has received enough love from the devs that it got banned in competitive online matches.
The gun affords a quick fire rate, extended magazine size, and a small spread which makes for easy wielding. It’s also great for a more “stealthed out” build with its low profile, very realistic design.
11 Cold War
Aside from the standard assault rifles, shotguns, and snipers in an FPS campaign, there are also grenade launchers to play with. Titanfall 2 features “normal” grenade launchers, those that fire missiles, and even balls of energy. The Cold War separates itself from the explosive pack by firing four energy shots that in most cases will cause the enemy to explode. Its energy quad shot is highly destructive and can clear out most enemy forces in an instant.
Similar to snipers, the use of grenade launchers in the grand scheme of things is a bit impractical during the campaign. Assault rifles, SMGs, and LMGs all operate at a higher efficiency rate than launchers and snipers, but the latter weaponry is best suited for short bursts. Picking up the Cold War to quickly dispose of a handful of enemies then discarding it for, let’s say, a Flatline is a more logical approach to utilizing specialty guns like the Cold War.
10 R-101 Carbine
If you want a consistent gun great for close or ranged engagements, the R-101 Carbine is the option for you. It’s especially great for controller players as it has aim assist and what feels like little to no recoil. However, it isn’t as maneuverable as the R-201.
Despite that, it is a 10 shot K.O. and, some fans would argue, TTK is the most important aspect of PVP in Titanfall 2.
9 Spitfire
For players who prefer the large magazine and high damage output of the L-STAR, but hate the overheating mechanism instead of reloading should look no further than the Spitfire. This traditional light machine gun is the standard edition and doesn’t have the flashiness of its energy counterpart.
While the Spitfire’s initial shots are a bit inaccurate, the gun settles down into an accurate, smooth fire rate weapon with an extremely large magazine. The Spitfire is commonly found throughout Typhon, so if players develop a liking to the LMG then finding ammo shouldn’t be a concern.
8 Wingman
In old Westerns, cowboys would cherish their revolvers as if the guns were a trusty companion. The Wingman is such a revolver. Enemies can be taken down in as little as two shots from the Wingman.
The Wingman has a low fire rate and low magazine size, but the revolver makes up for it with the high stopping-power of each shot. No other sidearm has the type of power and accuracy as the revolver, making the Wingman one of the best secondary weapons in Titanfall 2.
7 Flatline
One of the two standard assault rifles in the game, the Flatline is the plain, vanilla assault rifle featured in all shooters. Quite frankly, there is nothing special about the Flatline at all, but that doesn’t mean the rifle is worthless. This weapon has a normal rate of fire and damage output, and also tends to be highly accurate when using hip fire.
The Flatline is one of the most commonly used weapons on Typhon, making finding ammo less of a priority. Using the Flatline isn’t necessarily “fun,” but it gets the job done and ultimately that’s what Cooper is trying to do: finish the mission.
6 Devotion
This was a fan-favorite from the beginning in Titanfall 2 that, even after nerfs, remains pretty well viable in the current meta. Though it has a lower TTK due to its firing mechanism, the chamber ramp up puts out good damage at max RPM. It’s also an LMG instead of an SMG making it good for ranged engagements.
It’s also a great option when you are in the open taking on multiple targets. Depending on your build and Titan choice, Devotion may be just the gun you need in your kit.
5 Volt
Out of the energy weapons available, none are as consistently effective as the Volt. The energy submachine gun provides a steady fire rate and relative damage to swiftly bring down enemy forces. Normally, the Volt is used by the robot Pilots, but that doesn’t stop Cooper from using the enemy’s weapons against them.
Titanfall 2 is nearly constant action, so the Volt’s high effectiveness in close range makes the SMG an extremely viable option for a run ’n gun playstyle.
4 Mastiff
There isn’t a better close-range weapon than the Mastiff. This auto shotgun fires a wide-sweeping shot that decimates enemies up close. The Mastiff has an annoyingly long reload after using the small magazine, so reloading before completely clearing out the clip is recommended.
Finding ammo might be a bit harder to find than other weapons, not only because of the effectiveness of the Mastiff but there’s also the other shotgun, EVA-8, scattered around Typhon. The Mastiff, interestingly, is among one of the most prized weapons to make the jump from Titanfall 2 to Respawn’s take on the battle royale formula, Apex Legends.
3 R-201 Assault Rifle
Similar to the Flatline, there’s nothing truly special about the R-201. It’s a standard assault rifle with a normal-sized clip. But it’s in that normalcy where the R-201 shines as the best gun in Titanfall 2. There’s not another weapon that performs as consistently well as this rifle.
From the rate of fire to the recoil, the R-201 demonstrates extreme poise and effectiveness from nearly all ranges. The R-201 is the most balanced weapon in Titanfall 2, and that balance that ultimately raises the value of the R-201.
2 Mozambique
This might be one of the most loved weapons in the Titanfall 2 community and, for good reason, it has earned the moniker “Mozambeast”. What’s more: it’s been the most popular secondary weapon since Titanfall 2’s release.
It’s a pistol/shotgun hybrid that offers consistent performance and can take out enemies in two shots when in close range. Consider it best for K.O.s against already damaged enemies.
1 Hemlok
A great deal about Titanfall 2 is NOT like a Call of Duty game – one reason why the community loves the gunplay so much. But the Hemlok, with its burst-fire, can feel more like a CoD weapon by comparison. However, Titanfall 2’s vertical gameplay changes how useful the gun can really be.
It has an incredibly low TTK so you can take on multiple opponents on one clip for long-range and mid-range engagements.
