Today is National Video Game Day, and to get into the spirit of things, many are using the #NationalVideoGameDay to share their favorite game online. It seems that most are using this as a chance to set aside differences and gripes about console wars to come together and celebrate the hobby.

National Video Game Day dates back to the year 1991, when one David Earle declared that July 8th would be a day for celebration for video game lovers. Whether or not this is actually an official holiday is somewhat uncertain, but any chance to celebrate shouldn’t be passed up.

Among the many tweets flooding the internet with this hashtag, there are accounts from gamers sharing their favorite games, which games got them into gaming, and more. People are taking the time to reflect on just how far gaming has come since 1991 and before, and some game development companies are even getting involved.

What is particularly enlightening about this experience is seeing the vast diversity in what people are talking about. No single game seems to be dominating the conversation, with some singing the praises of Final Fantasy games while other bring up Minecraft, Pokemon, and countless others.
