There have been tons of games that revolve around vampires. For decades, vampires have been a popular concept, and tons of games have featured their own take on the undead. From games where you get to play as a vampire yourself to ones where you are tasked with trying to slay them, there is a huge variety of video game content featuring vampires.
The Sims series, for example, even has a popular vampire expansion that lets you create undead sims. To celebrate vampires in video games, below are the top ten vampire based video games according to Metacritic.
10 Skyrim: Dawnguard (79)
It’s not surprising that Dawnguard made its way onto this list. Dawnguard was an anticipated DLC for Skyrim and allowed you to become a vampire lord. Fans loved the expansion and greatly attached to the characters within. Dawnguard is now bundled in the full edition of the game for current consoles and is still tons of fun to play through.
9 Buffy The Vampire Slayer (79)
It’s surprising when games based on other media franchises actually do well. Buffy The Vampire Slayer released for the original Xbox and quickly cut its way into players’ hearts. The game lets you play as Buffy as you use a plethora of moves to cut down your enemies. This is a must-play for fans of vampires, even if they have never looked into the Buffy series before.
8 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines(80)
Vampire: The Masquerade quickly became a popular topic when it was released for PC. The game injects you directly into the world of vampires and lets you create your own character and choose their backstory.
You then get to walk around the RPG world, exploring a world of shadows and gaining new abilities.
7 The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile (81)
This was a game originally released on the Xbox 360. The game is a 2D beat-em-up where you play as two characters, the titular Dishwasher, and Yuki, as you uncover the two characters’ paths by playing through their story campaigns.
If you are looking for a solid beat-em-up with a good story, then this is the perfect vampire game to spend your time on. If you want the full story, then be sure to pick up the first game in the series, as well.
6 BloodStain: Curse of The Moon (82)
Bloodstain: Curse of The Moon was released for all current-gen consoles and set out to capture the magic of Castlevania. The game has you play through a 2D world where you must platform through stages and take on vicious enemies. The game features multiple enemies and a great formula for speedrunners.
5 Darkstalkers Ressurection (82)
Darkstalkers is an older fighting game series that originally developed for arcade cabinets. Resurrection came out for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game introduced new graphics and the ability to play against other fans online. It was seen as an incredibly solid fighting game and is still played in tournaments around the world today.
4 Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (85)
It’s no surprise that the top vampire games on Metacritic are from the acclaimed Castlevania series. Coming in with a score of 85 is Lord of Shadows, which released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
You take control of Gabriel Belmont, who is on a quest for revenge after his wife is murdered. You must free her soul from limbo and slay the vampires that shattered Gabriel’s life.
3 Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow(85)
Aria of Sorrow was released for Gameboy Advance and followed Soma Cruz through Draculas castle. A prophecy has retold of Draculas reincarnation, and it’s up to Soma to stop him from causing mayhem. The series has a twist ending that sent Castlevania fans into a frenzy and earned the game it’s a popular sequel.
2 Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (89)
Dawn of Sorrow is the sequel to Aria of Sorrow and completes the story. The game once again has you play as Soma Cruz, who is grappling with the fact that he is the reincarnation of Dracula. There is also a cult that wishes for him to give in to his dark nature.
The game tells an interesting narrative as Soma works to avoid his fate and stay on the side of good. This twist on the classic vampire tale breathed new life into the series and delighted long time fans of the game.
1 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (93)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released for Playstation one in 1997 and has since held the spot of being the top vampire based game. This game picks up where the previous game ended and takes players back into the world of Rondo of Blood.
You play as Alucard, the son of Dracula, as he must confront his father and stop him from destroying all of humanity. This puts another interesting twist on the story, as it lets you see Dracula from a whole new perspective.
