It’s been a bit of a rocky start for Torchlight III. After releasing on Steam Early Access on June 13, reviews have been decidedly mixed. Most fans are complaining that the game feels incomplete and that it plays like a free-to-play MMO that was turned into a proper Torchlight game at the last second.

Which is, of course, exactly what happened.

Torchlight III used to be called Torchlight Frontiers, but Echtra changed course late in development to be a more traditional ARPG. Now released on Steam Early Access in a very raw form, the dev team is racing to get Torchlight III into a state where fans are actually comfortable with it.

That state definitely wasn’t at launch, but it might be getting a little closer thanks to a massive update that just released. It brings Torchlight III’s third and final act, a climactic showdown between the adventurers and Veriss, sister of the vanquished Sadista, and carrier of the Void Heart. It’s up to you to stop Veriss from merging the human and Netherim worlds and causing eternal darkness to befall the realm.

This third act brings with it a new location can Echonok, a mountainous region that is the former home of the dwarves. Now it’s the home of the Voltura, a strange “bird-machine hybrid” race of scavengers that definitely want to eat you. There’s also a bunch of new quests, dungeons, and Echonok-themed loot to grind for.

But on top of act 3, Torchlight III just got a massive patch–so massive that it didn’t even fit on a single Steam update page! The patch includes improvements to the UI, graphics, bug fixes, as well as weapon, item, and character rebalances. Contracts are a new addition that will have you take on challenging monsters to earn fame and get loot, including “pets, resources, recipes, fort decorations, extra character slots, stash tabs, and more.”

This is a great first step, but Torchlight III is still in early access, so don’t expect this to fix all of the game’s issues at once. That said, if you were put off by Torchlight III’s first offering, it might be time to give the game another chance.
