Trials of Mana has finally released for fans of the action JRPG Mana franchise to finalize the trilogy of remakes. Coming in as a deeper experience than the previous remakes, some fans are wondering how long it will take to complete and luckily for them it comes in as the longest.
Released last week, Trials of Mana is the remake of the 1995 classic that became a notorious Japan only release. For those eager to step into the world of Mana once again, they can get ready for a 25 to 30 hour long experience based on early indications by press and players.
Comparing this entry to the other remakes in the franchise, it is a notable leap in terms of content. Adventures of Mana, released in 2016 for PlayStation Vita and Mobile platforms, clocks in at a 10 hour experience according to users on How Long to Beat. The remade sequel, 2018’s Secret of Mana stands at under 20 hours with a few extra for completionists. This means Trials of Mana is definitely taking a much bigger step in terms of player content.
As mentioned, Trials of Mana is the remake of a legendary JRPG that became a source of ire for western fans. The original was released in 1995 as a Super Famicom exclusive with the name Seiken Densetsu 3. It was near 25 years later that an official translation was released as part of the Collection of Mana for the Nintendo Switch. The remake of Trials of Mana was announced alongside the collection.
Reviews already indicate that Trials of Mana doesn’t suffer quite as much from the same issues as the previous remakes of the franchise. Adventures of Mana, a remake of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, was criticized for its mobile first design hampering the experience. Secret of Mana’s remake faced similar backlash netting it a 63 aggregate on Metacritic due to the lack of upgrades from the previous entry. Currently, Trials of Mana sits at a 76 aggregate as of the time of writing with most reviewers noting the fun combat system but unpolished experience.
Those possibly on the fence of Trials of Mana have the opportunity to try the demo released in March. There were many overhauls to the systems of Trials of Mana as it was brought to modern platforms. While it hasn’t received the stellar reception fans were hoping for, many are taking their first steps in the Mana franchise and can play class master to their hearts content.
Trials of Mana is available now on PC, PS4, and Switch.
