It appears that the first upcoming expansion for Twilight Imperium: Fourth Edition, Prophecy of Kings, has leaked online before its formal reveal. The leak comes in the form of a product listing that has been available online for around three months now. Until this point, it was easy to say that the image below could be fake, but now several retailers have added official listings for this expansion that match the listed product code, giving a major boost to the credibility of the source that we will be seeing an addition to one of the best board games ever made.
If the information is correct, the expansion would bring players several of the most requested changes and improvements since the game first released, starting with upping the maximum number of players from six to eight. To provide an even greater depth of play and to account for up to two more players, seven new factions would be added as well.
There is also a description of new mech units, new leaders, and more. The expansion would come with a total of forty more system tiles to allow players to keep building larger galaxies, which would once again make sense considering the additional players.
Surprisingly, the listing still places the total play time as taking between four and eight hours. This is the only part the feels as though it may be incorrect, because while new features may not make the game any longer, having eight players up from six should bring with it far more strategy to consider and time needed for each player to take their turns.
Still, that final part is said with a grain of salt. Getting six players to coordinate their free time, or better said, nearly an entire day, to play a single game is a feat in itself. Those who are organized enough to have a total of eight players ready to ride in Twilight Imperium: Fourth Edition are likely well versed in the rules of the game and know how to play efficiently.
Of course, most of us would buy an expansion like this purely for the additional content and faction options. While the leak is still unconfirmed and floating around in the realm of speculation, it does look quite good, and we certainly hope to receive confirmation soon that it is in fact releasing as described.
