Tributes to the late Byron “Reckful” Bernstein has poured in over social media and within World of Warcraft ever since news broke of his unfortunate passing yesterday. Reports indicate that Reckful committed suicide, although details remain unknown, we do know that he proposed to fellow streamer Becca via Twitter on the same day, perhaps an indicator of his mental distress. Fans were also concerned regarding Reckful’s use of psilocybin, which seemed to be used in place of prescription medication.

While details will likely remain scant, what we do know is that Reckful was a much-beloved figure in the Twitch community and that his passive is a blow for both fans and gamers. Reckful made his biggest mark in World of Warcraft where he was the first person to reach a 3000 rating and win Major League Gaming’s World of Warcraft tournament in 2010. WoW players from all over the world paid tribute to Reckful by piling into The Cathedral, and even Horde players came to offer their condolences in Alliance soil (which naturally devolved into combat).

But Reckful’s greatest claim to fame was as a Twitch streamer. He was one of the first streamers to arrive on the platform, and this has led for calls to immortalize Reckful in the form of a global emote.

“And one thing that I wish and hope that Twitch can do is make him a global emote. I think that would be justified for how much he’s done for the platform,” said streamer Mizkif in a recent broadcast. “So he forever lives on.”

Similar calls have been placed on Reddit to give Reckful a global emote on Twitch, with one suggesting that Reckful’s mascot of Lamar the Lizard be handed out to everyone on the platform.

Twitch has yet to comment on calls for a Reckful emote, but the platform has at least acknowledged his passing with a message on Twitter.

“Byron was someone who talked about his struggles to help make room for others to do the same,” Twitch wrote. “As we process this loss, we have to recognize that the stigma around mental health and treatment often prevents people from seeking and getting the help they need.”
