When it comes to the top Twitch streamers, many people often think of Ninja, who has leveraged his Fortnite fame to become an internationally-known celebrity, and DrDisRespect, who portrays a WWE-style character to entertain his viewers. However, another top Twitch streamer continues to rise through the ranks in the form of former eSports star Michael Grzesiek, also known as Shroud, whose remarkable skill in shooters has helped make him famous on the streaming site.
Shroud has hit a new milestone on Twitch, passing 100,000 subscribers and nearly 6 million followers. Shroud is ranked the second-most popular channel on Twitch, behind only Ninja, and also boasts over 4 million subscribers on YouTube. As previously stated, Shroud has mostly made a name for himself through his skill, which is on display in his Black Ops 4 Blackout gameplay clips and elsewhere.
Shroud originally rose to prominence by playing games like Counter-Strike, but his fame has been on a serious upward trend since battle royale games became popular. Shroud has streamed himself playing all of the major battle royale games, including PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (which actually banned him for flying in a hacked car), Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode, Fortnite, and the latest battle royale craze, Respawn’s Apex Legends.
Shroud’s expertise when it comes to the battle royale genre has actually seen him have an influence on game development. We know that Shroud was consulted prior to the launch of Apex Legends, and it’s likely that Respawn still takes his opinion seriously as it releases new patches and updates for the game. For example, Shroud’s criticism of the Wingman nerf in Apex Legends may see Respawn take more drastic steps in reducing the deadly magnum’s power.
Moving forward, it seems likely that Shroud will continue playing battle royale games, and may even move on to the next big FPS craze, whatever that may be. In the near future, we know that Battlefield 5’s Firestorm battle royale mode is scheduled to release sometime later this month, and if it does, fans should be able to look forward to Shroud at least giving it a shot on Twitch.
