When it comes to what’s being watched on television, there’s no bigger name than Nielsen. Since the 1950’s, Nielsen has been the most important source of viewership info for the TV industry, and has had a massive influence on what television is, and isn’t. Now, as the medium changes and takes new forms, Nielsen has added, for the first time ever, a roundup of streaming viewership to its weekly data reports.
Despite the high viewership numbers for acquired content, original programming still does better numbers than acquired overall. Netflix has reiterated that they see better results and investment from original films and shows. Most streaming executives also seem to agree that original content is the best driver of more subscription sales, not repackaged shows. In general, most services use original content to entice sales and promote immediate engagement, while building a robust library is useful for long-term user retention.
