News of the Uncharted movie adaptation’s delay comes as no surprise amidst the ongoing pandemic, but it’s nevertheless a sore one for video game fans to bear. Sony revealed four major changes to its 2021 release schedule, where Tom Holland’s treasure-hunting adventure was given the lengthiest delay of them all.
Reported by Deadline, Sony updated its immediate calendar with a handful of delays. The musical Cinderella was pushed back to the summer from its February release, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway lost its Easter spot by moving to the summer as well, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife had its ideal summer slot revoked with a push back until November. While the aforementioned three projects received delays of a few months, the highly anticipated Uncharted movie got delayed until February 11, 2022 - a disappointing seven-month setback.
The live-action equivalent of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game franchise had rocky progress from its inception, getting passed between multiple directors for years. After securing a November 2021 release date back in April of last year, that date then changed to July 2021 - which stuck until now. Sony Pictures wrapped filming back in October - shooting in Germany for a time - despite the production schedule being delayed due to the pandemic. When the adaptation finally releases, it will do so in IMAX, RealD 3D, and Dolby Cinema - and we expect some eye-popping cliff-hopping.
Ruben Fleischer’s take on A Thief’s End will follow a young Nathan Drake - played by Tom Holland - as he globe-trots with Mark Wahlberg’s Sully by his side. The film’s supporting cast includes Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle, and it’s heading down the right path to breaking the curse of video-game-to-film adaptations. Previous live-actions - including Justin Kurzel’s 2016 Assassin’s Creed flick - have been incredibly disappointing, to say the least. However, between Fleischer’s talents as a filmmaker and Holland’s charisma, we suspect there’s a winner coming next year.
As a new year gift, Sony Pictures released four new stills from the upcoming title - showing the film’s rich colors and rustic maps. The images also revealed Holland using a golden cross as a key, as well as showing an ancient statue covered in cobwebs. The next teaser we can look forward to is an official trailer, which will have to be enough to sustain another year of waiting.
